Where is Playa Del Carmen in Mexico?
Playa Del Carmen is in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. This is the part that curves on the eastside of the country.
Playa Del Carmen is in the Riviera Maya. This is a stretch of coast that is home to some of the best beaches in Mexico. To our north is Cancun. This is where you most likely will arrive. Cancun Airport is the main arrival point for people visiting the area. We are about 45 minutes south of Cancun and Cancun Airport.
Tulum is to our south. Tulum is about 40 minutes away down the 307 Highway.
There is so much to access from Playa! There are Mayan ruins, colonial cities and all the Riviera Maya beaches! We are in a great location to explore.
What is Playa Del Carmen all about?
Many people love Playa Del Carmen because it is a seaside town. It is more European feeling than cities like Cancun. What once was a small fishing village has grown into an international city today. Playa is very cosmopolitan and international at the same time it can have a small town feel.
The center of town is very walkable. There is one main pedestrian street that parallels the beach. This is called 5th Avenue. There are about 22 blocks to see here. This is where people love to walk and shop. There are also many restaurants and things to see on this street. You can read more about 5th Avenue in our guide here.

This is great information for visiting the area. We have been planning a trip to mexico for two years now and are looking forward to the next time already. The sun and beaches are great plus our kids love Xcaret, so we are sold on the area. Now with the exchange rate, it is even more affordable to visit.
Do you have any articles or recommendations on hiring/using a property management company? My MIL owns a home, but only comes a few times a year and is looking for a reputable one that handles all her property needs. Thanks
Hello
There are always new companies starting and it is hard to keep up with them. One tip is to get some references, then look at the properties the company manages. Look at the reviews, there will always be some negative revies, but overall, how is the company doing? You can get some references from the Facebook groups of expats in the Playa or Riviera Maya areas. North American Standard is a popular one, but sometimes depending on location and details of your condo, they are not looking to add more.
I planned a solo vacation to go to Mexico for the first time. I started my Mexico vacation in Puerto Morelos at an all-inclusive resort. While at the resort I found out about Playa Del Carmen. I was trying to decide if I should go to Playa Del Carmen not having done any research. Two days before check out of the resort I landed on your website. While overlooking the Riveria Maya from my balcony sipping a mojito, I scoured your website for information and decided to head down to Playa Del Carmen.
I spent 5 days in Playa Del Carmen in January 2023. The articles and guides regarding safety, nightlife, nightclubs and bars, the beach, shopping and transportation are spot on. I really enjoyed every day in Playa Del Carmen with the recommendations from your site. landing on your website helped me get the information I needed to be adventurous! I do plan to go back to Playa Del Carmen and note the time for low season rates. Please continue creating valuable content!
Thank you for reading the website. We like to give people practical and honest assessments of things. We hope you get to come back again.
Can you please tell me what is the date for the “Big Parade” for CARNIVAL in Playa Del Carmen 2023.
Hello
We still do not have a date from the city. We will post it on Facebook once we hear something. It is normally very late and we tell them that people like to plan ahead, but each year it is very late announcement.
We posted the other day on facebook the schedule for Carnival.
Can you recommend a decent place to park while visiting Playa Del Carmen? Thx, Steve from CND
Hello. We do have a guide to parking in Playa Del Carmen where you can see where garages are and parking lots. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/parking-in-playa-del-carmen/
Most will cost about 20 pesos an hour or 200 for the 24 hour period.
Is Aventura Mexicana really closed? Stayed there in March 2023 and have stayed there over 20 times. What happened? Will it reopen under new name?
We still have not heard anything concrete. Mostly likely this will be turned into a condo building with more floors. The land is getting too valuable to keep small hotels. This has happened to the Bric hotel a couple of blocks over and a few others.
when you hear aything about what they plan on doing to Aventura Mexicana please advise. such a nice beautiful hotel to be torn down!
Can you provide suggestions for great places to get a cheap massage on the beach?
There are none. Great places and cheap are not going to go together. Nor are beach and massage. Massages on the beach or near it are going to be for tourists that don’t really know what a good massage is. The best massages are in establishments that have a good reputation. Many places on 5th or the beach will rent a hotel room or space and just hire people to put hands on people. You might get some good massages in Tulum on the beach, but they will be expensive. Into Beach club between 4th and 6th might be your best bet for something on the beach and not too casual in quality.
