Do I Need a Car in Playa Del Carmen?

One of the most important considerations for people looking to visit or live in Playa Del Carmen is whether they need a car. The answer depends largely on your lifestyle, where you stay, and how much exploring you plan to do. Many visitors are surprised to learn that Playa Del Carmen is one of the most walkable cities in Mexico, especially in the downtown. At the same time, there are situations where having a car can make life easier, particularly if you plan to explore the surrounding areas of the Riviera Maya.

We will estimate that 5% of tourists that arrive at the Cancun Airport rent a car. Another 5% of tourists will rent a car for a day or two while on vacation. Of the full-time residents living in Playa Del Carmen about 55% have a car. For those that live part of the year in Playa, there are about 20% that keep a car in Playa. You can see that overall, most people can get by without a car in Playa Del Carmen.

Let’s first talk about Playa Del Carmen in general and why or why not you might need a car. Then we will look at the question if tourists need to rent a car in Playa. Lastly, we will look at residents living in Playa and if it is necessary to have a car.

Understanding how transportation works in Playa del Carmen can help you decide whether renting or owning a car is necessary for your stay.

Playa Del Carmen Is Very Walkable

The downtown area of Playa Del Carmen is extremely walkable. The city is built in a simple grid layout, and most of the popular places are located close together. The famous pedestrian street called 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) runs parallel to the beach and stretches for several kilometers through the center of town. Along this street you will find restaurants, bars, shops, pharmacies, art, and entertainment.

If you stay near the beach or within a few blocks of Quinta Avenida, you can easily walk to most things you need. Grocery stores, banks, gyms, cafes, and medical clinics are all located within a short distance in the central neighborhoods.

Many residents who live in central Playa Del Carmen rarely use a car at all. Walking is often faster than driving because traffic and parking in the tourist areas can be slow during busy times.

Taxis Are Everywhere But Can Add Up

Taxis are one of the easiest ways to get around Playa del Carmen. The city has thousands of taxis that operate throughout the area, and you will see them constantly driving through the streets.

Most rides within the city are relatively inexpensive. Short trips around town usually cost the equivalent of a few dollars. Because taxis are so common, you rarely have to wait long to find one. In many areas a taxi will drive by every few minutes. There are also taxi stands (mainly next to 5th Avenue). These are the same taxis but charge more since they wait for customers.

Taxis are especially convenient at night if you are going out to restaurants or nightlife areas and prefer not to walk or have to worry about parking.

However, taxis are not perfect nor loved as much due to having no meters and are known for over charging. Taxi prices are set up by zone and taxis are supposed to charge fares based on a chart. For residents of Playa, taxis are sometimes a necessary evil to get around. See our Playa Del Carmen Taxi guide for more details about taking taxis.

Colectivos as Transportation Out of Playa Del Carmen

Another very popular transportation option is the colectivo system. Colectivos are shared vans that operate along the main highway connecting cities in the Riviera Maya. These small vans either go on the route between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum or on the route Playa Del Carmen to Cancun. See more in out colectivo guide here.

From Playa Del Carmen you can easily take a colectivo to places like Tulum or Cancun for a very low price. These vans run constantly throughout the day and are used by both locals and travelers. This is one of the ways that residents and tourists get to places along the Riviera Maya without having to have a car.

Is Public Transportation Sufficient Not to Have a Car?

Unfortunately, public transportation in Playa Del Carmen consists of an older bus system. Buses mainly go on 30th Avenue and service the communities on the other side of the 307 Highway.

For tourists these public busses will not really take you anywhere within Playa Del Carmen that you want to go. The buses are also slow, and most people just take a taxi.

For residents, public buses only really work as a daily commute to a job. If you are looking to live on the other side of the 307 Highway, you will have to consider the benefits of owning a car compared with taking the local buses.

ADO Buses and Getting Around

ADO is the largest bus company that connects Playa Del Carmen to other cities in the Riviera Maya and Yucatan Peninsula. Although the ADO bus does not go between any two points in Playa Del Carmen, these buses can help you live car free or travel without renting a car. ADO buses are clean and efficient with many schedules a day to destinations. See more in our guide to bus travel in Mexico guide

Biking Around the City

Many people who live in Playa Del Carmen choose to get around by bicycle. The terrain is completely flat, and distances within the city are short. This makes biking one of the easiest and most affordable ways to move around. See our guide to biking and bicycles in Playa Del Carmen for more details.

Some neighborhoods also have dedicated bike lanes, particularly along larger roads. Because of the warm climate and relatively small size of the city, biking is a practical daily transportation option for many residents.

Playa Del Carmen has moved in recent years to make biking more friendly and easier. However, it should be noted that most streets are narrow, and drivers are not as used to cyclist sharing the lanes with them. Street conditions can also make it hard to bike, potholes, no shoulders and large avenues with lots of traffic can make it hard.

If you are tourist, you can find bike rentals in Playa for the day or longer so you can explore a little. Just make sure you have a good lock, because bikes are quickly stolen without a good lock.

Scooters, Motorcycles and other Mini Transportation

Some people like to rent scooters on vacation to get around. Some residents choose a scooter over a car because of costs. Scooters, motorcycles, ATV’s, 4-Wheelers, and golf carts are all available as forms of transportation. The thing to keep in mind is that these are all regulated and need license plates to operate on the street. They also can require a special driver’s license.

Having a scooter can eliminate having a car in Playa Del Carmen. There are however drawbacks to these non-car types of transportation. The two biggest drawbacks to owning a scooter are theft of the scooter (or the batteries) and accidents. A small pothole can cause a bad accident with a scooter. When it rains, visibility of where there are potholes is limited and this can cause accidents. See our guide to owning a scooter here.

When Renting a Car Makes Sense

Even though you can live comfortably in Playa Del Carmen without a car, there are times when renting one can be very helpful.

One of the main reasons people rent a car is to explore the many attractions located outside the city. The Riviera Maya is full of natural parks, cenotes, and archaeological sites that are easier to reach with your own vehicle.

For example, visiting parks such as Xcaret Park or Xplor Park is often simpler with a car because you can arrive on your own schedule. Adding transportation to your ticket or paying a taxi will cost more than a rental car.

Renting a car is also convenient if you plan to visit multiple cenotes in one day. Many cenotes are located along smaller roads in the jungle where public transportation does not always reach. You can also go to cenotes that are less visited because of limited transportation to get there.

Another popular reason to rent a car is visiting nearby archaeological sites like Chichen Itza or Coba. While tours are available, some travelers prefer the flexibility of driving themselves.

Tip: If you are staying at a hotel and you are going to rent a car, check the parking policy of the hotel. Most hotels in the downtown of Playa have no parking or they will say self-park on the street (which means paying for meters all day). It costs about 200-300 pesos a day to park in a garage. You can calculate this when looking at different hotels and which ones offer parking.

Parking Considerations

While driving is convenient for exploring, parking in downtown Playa Del Carmen can sometimes be difficult. Many streets are narrow and parking spaces fill up quickly in the busiest areas. There are also the parking regulations in downtown Playa. In most of the downtown area, streets are paid parking from 10:00am-10:00pm. See our guide to parking lots and garages in Playa Del Carmen

In residential neighborhoods farther from the center, parking is usually much easier.

Living in Playa Del Carmen Without a Car

Many expats who move to Playa Del Carmen intentionally choose to live without a car. They rely on walking, taxis, and occasional car rentals when they want to explore. There are even groups on Facebook that plan Costco runs with a van. These are open to people wanting to purchase in Cancun or other locations.

This lifestyle works well because the city is compact and transportation options are simple to use. It also eliminates costs such as insurance, fuel, maintenance, and parking. Some condo buildings come with a parking spot, but most buildings only have about 30% of units with a spot. So, take this under consideration if you are looking to buy a condo.

For people who live close to the center or work remotely, owning a car often becomes unnecessary.

The Bottom Line

Most visitors and residents discover that they do not need a car for daily life in Playa Del Carmen. The downtown is highly walkable, and taxis and public transportation make it easy to get around.

However, renting a car can be a great option if you want to explore the many parks, cenotes, beaches, and archaeological sites that make the Riviera Maya such a special destination.

For many people, the best solution is a combination of both. Enjoy the walkable lifestyle of Playa Del Carmen most of the time, and rent a car for a few days when you want to venture out and discover the incredible places surrounding the city.
