ADO Airport Bus: Your Guide from Cancun Airport to Riviera Maya
Millions of people fly into the Cancun International Airport each year, all looking to get to and from their vacation spot. The ADO bus has been one of the principal forms of transportation to get from the airport to destinations in the Riviera Maya. This economical and efficient service might be the best option for you. Here are details about how to take the ADO bus to and from the Cancun Airport. They mainly service Cancun downtown, Hotel Zone of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.
What is the ADO Service?
ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) is one of Mexico’s largest and most trusted bus networks, offering comfortable, economical, and reliable travel throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. Highly popular for airport transfers, ADO connects Cancun Airport with key destinations like Cancun downtown, Hotel Zone of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and beyond.
How and Where to Buy Tickets for the ADO Bus
Buy Tickets Before Arrival?
You can purchase tickets at the ADO counter or online in advance. However, we do not recommend buying tickets before you get to Mexico. Tickets are timed and you are not sure if your fight will arrive on time or how long it will take to get out of the airport. Plus, many foreign credit cards are not accepted online for purchase of bus tickets.
Where to Buy Your Bus Tickets
Once you arrive at the Cancun Airport and leave the customs area, you can purchase ADO tickets at an ADO booth or a stand on the bus platform. Usually, it is quicker to buy them outside on the bus platform. It also means you might be able to jump on a bus that is just leaving if they see you buying a ticket.
The ADO bus has assigned seats on your ticket. Sometimes when purchasing the tickets the person will turn the screen toward you to select seats, or they might just be automatically assigned.
Note: In the early hours of the day and after about 6:00pm, the outside ticket sellers are not working, so you need to purchase them inside.
Payment Methods Accepted for Tickets
You can pay with credit card, USD or Pesos. If you pay with USD, make sure you have small bills, nothing bigger than a 20-dollar bill. Change is in Pesos.
Tickets are also assigned a seat. Sometimes when purchasing the tickets the person will turn the screen toward you to select seats, or they might just be automatically assigned.

Where Do You Get the ADO Bus at the Airport?
Each of the terminals at the Cancun International Airport has service by ADO.
- Terminal 1 This terminal is currently being renovated. But when it opens it is easy to see the buses. This is a smaller terminal, and the ADO buses are just in front of this terminal. Exit the terminal and look right. It is about a one-minute walk.
- Terminal 2 Exit the terminal and walk immediately down the sidewalk in front of the terminal to the right. At the end of this walkway, you will see the bus platforms. This can be a four-minute walk.
- Terminal 3 Exit the building and walk straightforward and in about 30 seconds you will see the bus platforms with the iconic red buses to your right.
- Terminal 4 When you are leaving the terminal, there are two exits. One is straight ahead and one of the exits is the left and down a covered walkway. The exit straight ahead is for friends and family. The exit to the left is where you will walk out to the bus platforms. It is about a 3-minute walk. If you accidently walk out the wrong exit, you can ask the security to let you back in and go out the other exit to catch the ADO bus. Tip: Don’t listen to taxi drivers or other people that say the “next bus is in on hour or longer” or “there are no more buses today“. These are just tricks to get people to take a taxi or van service
Taking the ADO Bus Back to the Cancun Airport
Here are our best tips for you when planning your trip back to the Cancun Airport.
- Make sure you calculate enough time to get to the airport for your flight. Remember the bus stops at all the terminals, and if yours is the last one, it can be an extra 30 minutes. The ADO website will tell you the arrival time of each bus and terminal.
- Buy your ticket at least a day in advance. More during holiday periods.

Special Detail for the Playa Del Carmen to Cancun Airport Route

What to Expect Onboard the Bus
ADO buses are a comfortable and reliable way to travel, offering air conditioned cabins and spacious seating that make the journey enjoyable. The windows are equipped with curtains that can be opened or closed, allowing passengers to block out direct sunlight when needed.
The buses travel along main highways and well-maintained roads, providing a smooth and efficient route to popular destinations. ADO buses also have regulators, so the buses do not exceed the speed limit. This helps ADO maintain a good safety record.
Luggage is handled by staff and stored underneath the bus, and while there are typically no issues with missing bags or theft, it is a good idea to get off the bus promptly and be present when luggage is unloaded. - You can have up 2 pieces maximum per ticket.
- Backpacks with wheels are considered check in luggage.

Do ADO Buses Run Even on Christmas and New Years?
Yes! We get this question all the time. Since so many people are traveling on these days, ADO has regular schedule and you still can use the buses during busy holiday times. In fact, ADO operates 365 days a year. The only thing to not that around many holidays, there are more people traveling and buses can fill up fast. We recommend buying tickets for your return trip to the airport several days in advance. For other bus trips in the area, we recommend at least a week or more in advance during holiday periods.
Why Choose ADO?
Ado bus service has been around for a while and is a staple for airport transportation. Some of the advantages are:
- It is economical. It might be the cheapest option, but it depends on where you are going.
- Frequent service, for example about every 30 minutes there is a departure to and from the airport.
- Modern and comfortable. All buses are air conditioned and are kept clean.
- The service is reliable. Normally the schedule is always followed, and buses are kept in good running order.

Tips for Smooth Sailing
-
Buy your ticket early, especially during peak seasons. Around Christmas and New Years and also Easter week, these are good time to buy your tickets in advance especially returning to the airport. See the official website for ADO here for specials, bus schedules and prices. Sometimes there are sales on the ADO website when you purchase in advance. This applies more to regular routes and not so much the airport buses.
-
Carry small bills: Change is given in pesos, even if you pay in USD. Because the Cancun Airport has many international arrivals, USD is accepted (Usually only bills $20 or less are accepted). They set the exchange rate, usually a decent rate close to the official rate.
-
Block off a little extra time for points father from the airport, in case of extra traffic, accidents, or unexpected pauses. You can always look at google maps and direction to the airport. The app is up to date and will show accidents, slowdowns or choke points along the way. This way you can judge how soon before your flight you might want to take the bus.
-
Return trip? Purchase tickets ahead of time at the Playa Del Carmen ADO terminal to avoid waiting. We recommend at least one day before departing.
-
Arriving late at night or traveling with baggage? Private transfers services might offer a more convenient door-to-door experience. The bus can handle big bags and technically is supposed to charge for multiple bags over the standard limit. Perhaps only if you are coming for an extended stay then it would be good to take a private transfer.
ADO vs. Shared Shuttle to and from the Cancun Airport
The ADO bus is a great option if your final destination is close to the ADO bus station. But there is a better option and cheaper option if you are staying along the Riviera Maya and need an economical option to get to your hotel. Here is when a shared shuttle is better than the ADO bus.
- If you are staying at an all-inclusive hotel in the Riviera Maya that is not in Playa Del Carmen, a shared shuttle is a better option for you because you will not need to take an expensive taxi to and from the bus station.
- Shared shuttles can save you time because they are scheduled with stops at hotels near your or you might even have the whole shuttle to yourself with direct service to your hotel.
- If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, it will be easier to take the shuttle and not pay extra luggage for the bus. Plus, the effort of getting the luggage onto the bus and off again is harder.
