ADO Airport Bus: Your Guide from Cancun Airport to Riviera Maya
Millions of people fly into the Cancun International Airport each year, all looking to get to and from their vacation spot. The ADO bus has been one of the principal forms of transportation to get the airport to destinations in the Riviera Maya. This economical and efficient service might be the best option for you. Here are details about how to take the ADO bus to and from the Cancun Airport. They mainly service Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.
What Is the ADO Service?
ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) is one of Mexico’s largest and most trusted bus networks, offering comfortable, economical, and reliable travel throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. Highly popular for airport transfers, ADO connects Cancun Airport with key destinations like Cancún downtown, Hotel Zone of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and beyond.
How to Catch the ADO at the Airport
-
Terminals: ADO boards from Terminals 1 (currently closed for renovations), 2, 3, and 4. Look for the red ADO booths/kiosks both inside and just outside the arrival’s areas. If you are arriving before 9:00am or after 6:00pm it is better to buy your ticket inside the airport. Sometimes the booths on the platform are not open or close early in the evening.
-
Buying Tickets: You can purchase tickets at the ADO counter or online in advance. We do not recommend buying tickets before you get to Mexico. Tickets are timed and you are not sure if your fight will arrive on time or how long it will take to get out of the airport. Plus, many foreign credit cards are not accepted online for purchase of bus tickets.
-
One-way fares typically range from $13.50 USD to Playa Del Carmen, and about $18.80 USD to Tulum.
-
If you have time at the airport and know exactly when you want to leave for the airport for your return flight, you can buy your return ticket for the ADO bus. You can also purchase them in the bus station when you arrive from the airport or later during your trip. We do recommend buying tickets at least a day in advance so you reserve a space on the bus that gives you enough time to arrive and prepare for your flight. Sometimes buses going to the Airport are full when leaving Playa Del Carmen.

Taking the ADO Bus Back to the Cancun Airport
If you are leaving from Playa Del Carmen, you can board at either bus station in Playa Del Carmen. The ADO bus will start at the Juarez and 5th Avenue Station, then pass the ADO Bus Station on 20th Avenue, then continue onto the Cancun Airport. The bus will go to each terminal. Make sure you allow at least 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to your terminal. The bus takes about 5 minutes at each terminal to drop off passengers. Note: It is not possible to get off the bus at any terminal and walk to the others. All terminals are separated, and it is not really possible to walk between terminals.

What to Expect Onboard the Bus
-
Comfort: ADO buses offer air-conditioned cabins, spacious seating. The windows have curtains that can be opened or closed to block out direct sun.
-
Route: For Playa Del Carmen, expect a single direct stop at the ADO terminal — located at 5th Avenue & Juárez. The trip takes around 1 hour 15 minutes.
-
Luggage: Handled by staff and stowed underneath; no tags are provided. There are usually no issues with missing bags or theft, but it is good to get off first and be there for the bag distribution. Tip: Having a locked suitcase is a good idea and marking it to make it easily identifiable.
Why Choose ADO?
Ado bus service has been around for a while and is a staple for airport transportation. Some of the advantages are:
- It is economical. It might be the cheapest option, but it depends on where you are going. Sometime the shared shuttles are a better option. See section below.
- Frequent service, about every 30 minutes there is a departure to and from the airport.
- Modern and comfortable. All buses are air conditioned and are kept clean.
- The service is reliable. Normally the schedule is always followed, and buses are kept in good running order.

Tips for Smooth Sailing
-
Buy your ticket early, especially during peak seasons. Around Christmas and New Years and also Easter week, these are good time to buy your tickets in advance especially returning to the airport. See the official website for ADO here for specials, bus schedules and prices.
-
Carry small bills: Change is given in pesos, even if you pay in USD. Because the Cancun Airport has many international arrivals, USD is accepted (Usually only bills $20 or less are accepted). They set the exchange rate, usually a decent rate close to the official rate.
-
Block off at least 1 hour 15 minutes for Playa del Carmen, more during traffic or unexpected pauses. You can always look at google maps and direction to the airport. The app is up to date and will show accidents, slowdowns or choke points along the way. This way you can judge how soon before your flight you might want to take the bus.
-
Return trip? Purchase tickets ahead of time at the Playa Del Carmen ADO terminal to avoid waiting. We recommend at least one day before departing.
-
Arriving late at night or traveling with baggage? Private transfers services might offer a more convenient door-to-door experience. The bus can handle big bags and technically is supposed to charge for multiple bags over the standard limit. Perhaps only if you are coming for an extended stay then it would be good to take a private transfer.
ADO vs. Shared Shuttle to and from the Cancun Airport
The ADO bus is a great option if your final destination is close to the ADO bus station. But there is a better option and cheaper option if you are staying along the Riviera Maya and need an economical option to get to your hotel. Here is when a shared shuttle is better than the ADO bus.
- If you are staying at an all-inclusive hotel in the Riviera Maya that is not in Playa Del Carmen, a shared shuttle is a better option for you because you will not need to take an expensive taxi to and from the bus station.
- Shared shuttles can save you time because they are scheduled with stops at hotels near your or you might even have the whole shuttle to yourself with direct service to your hotel.
- If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, it will be easier to take the shuttle and not pay extra luggage for the bus. Plus, the effort of getting the luggage onto the bus and off again is harder.
