Cheapest Way to Get from the Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen

If you’re flying into Cancun International Airport (CUN) and heading south to Playa Del Carmen, one of the first questions you’ll ask is: what’s the cheapest way to get there?

The answer depends on your budget, group size, and where your hotel is located. Below, we break down the three most affordable transportation options, starting with the absolute cheapest and moving toward the most convenient. We will also talk about how much time each option takes because sometimes your time is valuable as well.

Cheapest Option Overall: ADO Bus from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen

For solo travelers and budget-conscious visitors, the ADO bus is usually the cheapest way to get from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen. ADO is the only public bus that services the Cancun Airport.

Why the ADO Bus Is the Cheapest

The ADO bus is the cheapest transportation option from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen, and for many travelers it offers the best balance of price and comfort. Compared to private transfers, taxis, or rental cars, the cost is significantly lower, making it ideal for solo travelers and couples who want to save money. The buses are modern, clean, and air-conditioned, with large luggage compartments underneath that easily handle full-size suitcases. Service is reliable throughout the day, with departures to Playa Del Carmen roughly every 30 minutes, so there is usually very little waiting time once you exit the airport. For budget-conscious travelers who still want a comfortable and dependable ride, the ADO bus is hard to beat.

How Much is a Ticket for the ADO Bus?

The one-way ticket from the Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen on the ADO bus is currently 270 pesos (About $15.50 USD) For current schedules and prices see the official ADO website here

How the ADO Bus Works

ADO buses run directly from Terminals 2, 3, and 4 at Cancun Airport to the Playa Del Carmen ADO Bus Terminal (5th Avenue & Juárez). This Juarez Avenue Station is the only bus station it arrives at, although returning to the airport, the ADO bus leaves from the Juarez Avenue Station and stops at the 20th Avenue ADO and continues to the Cancun Airport.

When you arrive at the Cancun Airport you can buy your ticket in the terminal at an ADO booth or on the platform outside. Tickets are timed and have assigned seats. ADO takes credit cards, USD and Pesos. Then exit the terminal and look for the bus platforms. Buses leave about every 30 minutes for Playa Del Carmen. They will be marked on the front of the bus for the direction they are going.

It takes about one hour to get to the Juarez Avenue ADO Bus Station in Playa Del Carmen. For more about how to take the ADO Bus from the Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen, see our article here.

Important Downsides of Taking the ADO Bus

While cheap, the ADO bus isn’t perfect. For many people staying in Playa Del Carmen they still need to take a taxi from the ADO Bus Station to the hotel. This can be an additional $5-10 USD for the taxi depending on where in the downtown is your hotel. If you are staying outside of the downtown area, taxis can be around $20-$30 USD each way. Take this into consideration when booking transportation. Also, if you are traveling with lots of luggage and children, it can be easier to take the private transfers to your hotel.

Best for: solo travelers, backpackers, light luggage, hotels near downtown Playa Del Carmen

Budget-Friendly Middle Ground: Shared Transfers

Shared shuttle transfers are a popular compromise between price and convenience. These offer door to door service for any of the hotels in the Riviera Maya.

How Shared Transfers Work

You’ll ride in a van with other travelers heading to Playa Del Carmen. The shuttle drops passengers off at different hotels along the route. These are prebooked transfers, so the booking can put you with other hotels nearby yours. Usually, the shuttle only goes to a few hotels.

Cost & Value

A shared shuttle is more expensive than the ADO bus but will drop you off at your hotel or accommodation without additional taxi ride. The price of a shared shuttle to Playa Del Carmen area is $36 USD per person when you have a minimum of two people. This is a little over double the ADO bus price but does get you door to door for a cheaper price than the private transfers.

If you think the shared shuttle is the cheapest and best option for you, it is best to reserve in advance, so it is all booked and planed. It is NOT possible to book a shared shuttle when you arrive at the Cancun Airport.

Things to Keep in Mind

You may wait at the airport until the van fills. Sometimes multiple riders are arriving at the same time but may take longer going through the airport (the company we recommend does a good job a scheduling and making the pickup go as fast as possible).  Shared shuttles can make several stops before getting to your hotel. Normally a stop can take an extra 8-10 minutes.

Best for: couples, first-time visitors, travelers who want door-to-door service without paying for a private vehicle

Often the Cheapest for Groups: Private Transfers from Cancun Airport

Many travelers assume private transfers are the most expensive option, but that’s not always true. If you’re traveling with 3 or more people, a private transfer can actually be the cheapest option per person.

Why Private Transfers Can Cost Less Than You Think

Many travelers assume that a private transfer from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen is expensive. The key is choosing a company that charges a flat rate per vehicle rather than per person. We recommend a transfer companies that offers one fixed price for the entire van, so whether you are traveling with two people or six, the rate stays the same.

A private transfer also takes you directly to your hotel, condo, or Airbnb, which means you do not need to pay for an additional taxi once you arrive in Playa Del Carmen. There is no waiting for other passengers, no shared rides, and no extra stops along the way. The vehicle is reserved just for you, which saves both time and stress after a long flight.

If you book round trip service, many companies offer a discount, something taxis cannot provide since you typically take a different taxi back to the airport. When you divide the total cost among multiple travelers, private transportation often ends up being cheaper than shared shuttles and sometimes even comparable to taking the ADO bus plus a taxi to your final destination.

Ideal Situations for Private Transfers

  • Families or groups of friends
  • Hotels or Airbnb’s far from the ADO bus station
  • Late-night or early-morning arrivals when there are less transportation options.
  • Travelers with lots of luggage. Divers can help load luggage.

What is the Price of a Private Transfer to Playa Del Carmen?

One-way from the Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen is $85 USD, Round trip is $165 USD. If you have two people in the transfer, you are only paying $6.50 USD more for the private service over taking a shared shuttle. If you have three people in the transfer, that is only $28.33 USD per person and is less than a shared shuttle, plus you get door to door service.

What about Taxis, Uber and the Tren Maya?

First of all, taxis are not the cheapest. They are one of the most complained about things in the Rivera Maya. Taxis do not use meters from the Cancun Airport, so you have to negotiate the price. Most of the time people overpay for the ride.

Uber does technically operate in Cancun although it does not operate in all of the Rivera Maya. Uber has never really worked well and have faced a lot of pushbacks from taxi drivers. Since it can be expensive and it is not possible to get return service to the Cancun Airport, we do not recommend this option. See our article Is there Uber from Cancun to Playa del Carmen? because we explain more here.

The Tren Maya does have a station at next to the Cancun Airport and this connects to the Playa Del Carmen station. However, the train is not the best option. It takes about twice as long as the ADO bus and costs more. The Train Maya is not the cheapest option as well because of the two shuttle buses you need to pay getting to and from the stations. We have a full article about how the Tren Maya works from the Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen here.

So, What Is the Cheapest Way to Get from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen?

Here’s the simple breakdown:

  • Cheapest for solo travelers: ADO Bus
  • Cheapest with hotel drop-off: Shared Transfer
  • Cheapest for groups: Private Transfer

If your hotel is not near the Playa Del Carmen ADO bus station, or you’re traveling with multiple people, a private transfer is often the best value, saving you time, stress, and sometimes money.

Final Tip About Getting from the Cancun Airport

Always factor in hidden costs like wait times and taxis trying to add on charges. The cheapest option on paper isn’t always the cheapest once you arrive tired after a flight. Remember you are paying to be on vacation and your time is valuable. Sometimes saving a couple of hours of waiting is worth it.
