Independence Day in Mexico is a very important holiday. It commemorates the rising up against Spain and gaining its independence from the crown. It was on September 16th, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell in the small town of Dolores in the center of Mexico to activate the people. This started the Mexican War of Independence which eventually led to the independence of Mexico in 1821.
Mexican Independence Day in Playa Del Carmen
This holiday is started on the night of the 15th of September every year. Usually at near 11pm these words are ushered
“¡Vivan los heroes que nos dieron patria! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Hidalgo! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Morelos! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Allende! ¡Viva!
¡Vivan Aldama y Matamoros! ¡Viva!
¡Viva nuestra independencia! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva! ”
Then the fireworks start. This excites the crowd. Stands selling noise makers, hats, flags and anything else patriotic are bought and used for the occasion. The central park in from of City Hall is used for this holiday here in Playa Del Carmen (between 8th St and 10th St and 15th Avenue and 25th Avenue). A large tent is stet-up and the fireworks are launched from the back side of City Hall. Thousands from Playa attend the festivities.
