What the Tren Maya is like from Playa Del Carmen to Cancun Airport

On February 29, 2024, the Tren Maya station in Playa Del Carmen was inaugurated. It was however not opened until March 15th, 2024, to operation of the train. Many people are asking how the Tren Maya will work between Cancun Airport and Playa Del Carmen as well as the train in general. We recently took the Tren Maya from Playa Del Carmen to Cancun and returned to show you what the train is like and a lot of details for the train. We hope you like our video below. Details for the Tren Maya between Playa Del Carmen and the Cancun Airport

If you are interested in taking the Tren Maya to and from the Cancun Airport, there are limited schedule now. Basically, you will need transportation to the Tren Maya Station in Playa Del Carmen and to take the free shuttle bus at the Cancun Station that connects to the Tren Maya Station. The free shuttle bus is green and marked. It leaves the Cancun Tren Maya Station and goes to Terminal 4, 3,2,1 and then returns to the station. It takes about 10 minutes to ride the bus, but it will depend on what terminal you are getting off or on at, so you need to calculate this time when traveling.

Prices and Times for the Tren Maya in Playa Del Carmen

The times for the Tren Maya leaving Playa Del Carmen are 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 4:30pm. The Tren Maya has this current schedule from Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen with departures at 9:00am, 12:00noon, 3:00pm.

There are several types of tickets for the train. Since most of our readers are international tourists, it is 197 pesos for tourist class or 2nd class, and 236 pesos for premier class or first class.

The time between the Cancun Airport and Playa Del Carmen is 1 hour. This needs to be calculated with the transportation to the Tren Maya Station in Playa Del Carmen and the free shuttle bus into the Cancun Airport.

ADO Bus to the Tren Maya Station in Playa Del Carmen

There are buses that run between the Tren Maya Station in Playa Del Carmen and the ADO Bus Station on 20th Avenue and 12th Street. It costs 55 pesos each way. The times of the bus are meant to line up with the Tren Maya schedule. Leaving the ADO Terminal, they are 9:00am, 12:00 noon, and 3:00pm. From the Tren Maya Station to the downtown the schedule is 10:10am, 1:10pm, and 4:10pm.

In the center of the Tren Maya Station is a booth for ADO bus. Even though it is ADO, some of the buses are Mayab. But at any rate, these are the buses that make the connections.

Taxis to the train station

Taxi stands are more expensive than hailing a taxi because taxi drivers wait for customer. From a taxi stand it from 5th Avenue to the Tren Maya it is 500 pesos. We have also talked to some taxi drivers, and they said it would be 300 pesos to the Tren Maya Station. So that is a range. At any rate it is a substantial added cost to taking the Tren Maya from Playa Del Carmen.

The train station in Playa Del Carmen is off of Avenida Colosio. This is the same avenue as Home Depot and that connects to the toll road to the 180-toll road.
From most of the downtown area it takes about 20 minutes to drive your car to the station.
There is free parking at the station. It does seem ample for now. Parking is in full sun, so you might not want to leave your car too long there.

What is the Playa Del Carmen Tren Maya Station like?

The train station in Playa is open air and pretty large. The entrance has a lot of spaces for small businesses. In the center of the station is a glass cube that has a reflecting pond below. As you continue deeper into the station you enter the turnstiles and are ready to take the stairs or escalators to the platform.

What is the ride like between Playa Del Carmen and Cancun Airport?

One thing that is interesting about the Tren Maya between Playa and Cancun Airport is the elevation. Much of the train is elevated and you see over the treetops. In fact, much of the views are trees or construction. So, it is not exactly a scenic train, although it is interesting to see the different views. For example, when you are close to Cancun you can see Xavage Park and the Airport Tower. There are also some roads and things in the jungle that we had never seen before.

Because the train is not too much on views, we do recommend bring a book or downloading something to read or view for your trip. the WIFI on the Tren Maya does not work well as of now.

Luggage on the Tren Maya

In our video we talked about the limitations on baggage for the Tren Maya. The official policy of the Tren Maya is one bag with a limit of 25kg and a dimensions of 65 cm x55cm x 13cm. In addition to this bag, a purse or computer bag is allowed. On your tickets, this information is printed in addition it says, “excess baggage can be shopped with an external company” This is one time we with the Tren Maya had online customer service so some of their policies can be flushed out. We cannot imagine them being very strict at the airport, but for now, the only official information is what the Tren Maya staff says at the station and what is written on the tickets and thier website.

What things are new or different with the Tren Maya now?

The Tren Maya is still being built and things are changing each month. Here are some new things for March 2024 that you should be aware of.

Tickets are sold online and in the stations. There have been some glitches online, so be sure to enter your email address for a receipt and take a screen shot or retain any confirmation of your tickets. This can be resolved usually at the station. If you are buying your tickets at the station, it should be noted that it does take time. It can be 5 minutes per couple. You will have to present your identification (for each person) to buy tickets and ride the train.
The Playa Del Carmen to Cancun Airport is open now and has 3 trains a day each way.
The Tren Maya website does not allow you to book more than a week in advance. The website is showing the year but when you click on it, there is no train available.
The Tren Maya website also does not let you book tickets from the newly opened Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen route to the existing route. This is most likely because the trains are not scheduled to meet between the two lines.
Update: All 4 types of tickets are not being sold online! March 25, 2024.
