What the Allegro Playacar Resort is Like
The Allegro Playacar Resort is an all inclusive hotel in Playa Del Carmen. This resort is in the Playacar section of Playa Del Carmen which is known for its nice beaches and access to the center of Playa Del Carmen. This resort is also known as one of the more budget friendly resorts in the area and good for families. So what is this resort like? We recently went to stay there so we could tell you all about it.
What the rooms are like at the resort
This resort is on the smaller side when it comes to resort size in the Riviera Maya. The rooms are sectioned off in small bungalows that dot the property. There are first floor or second floor rooms. This resort reminds us of how people used to travel and rent a room by the ocean. The vacation was to be at the destination, but not break the bank on accommodation.
The rooms range in size from 260 sq. ft. for the two classes of Superior rooms to the family rooms which come in 56 sq. ft. or 1127 sq. ft. Outside the rooms there are poaches or balconies that have hammocks so you can enjoy the outside and ocean breezes. The concept here is to be affordable for people to come, be right next to the beach and enjoy the resort property. Most of the couples and families that come to this resort spend the days on the beach, at the pool or on an occasional tour.
Inside the rooms there is a TV, mini fridge, and free Wi-Fi access that also works throughout the resort.
Dining options at the resort
The resort has four restaurants, a pizzeria, three bars and a sports bar.
The main buffet is located above the reception. Here you can have breakfast and dinners daily at your own pace. Next to the main pool you can find another restaurant where it is easy to drop by for lunch since most people are around the pool during the day. Also near the pools is the popular pizzeria where you can get fresh made pizza.
In the evening you can make a reservation at the Italian, Mexican, or Asian themed restaurants for a little more formal dining experience.
Overall for the price point of this hotel, most guests are satisfied with the offerings. Compared to similarly prices resorts this hotel does a decent job providing for its guests.
Entertainment and what there is to do at the hotel
Number one on most visitors list is the beach. The nice thing about this resort is the wide beach right in front of the hotel. Besides the beach, there are the two large pools. One pool has scheduled events and entertainment during the day and the other is more for relaxing.
Around the property you can find things like the large chess game to play with. There are a basketball court, tennis courts, and a game room where you can play pool, darts or air hockey.
There is a spa on the property for people ages 18 and up. For shopping there is a store with convenient things for your trip in the lobby and a stand near the pools with more souvenir based items.
If you want to get out on the water, there are some activities like sailing, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing, in addition to motorized water sports and deep sea fishing (for an extra charge).
In the evenings there are shows in the theater of the resort. These can be a nice thing to see after dinner. The live shows have different themes nightly.
Where is the Allegro Playacar Resort?
This resort is in Playa Del Carmen. On the south end of Playa Del Carmen is the private gated community of Playacar. This is where many of the all inclusive hotels are that are actually (in) Playa Del Carmen. Here at this resort you can feel like you are on a resort property, but you can also go to the downtown of Playa Del Carmen to look around if you want or go shopping. The location of this resort is a good balance between feeling like you are in a private resort, but also accessible to local things.
Just outside of this resort you will find a small shopping plaza and a Starbucks. This can be one place you can go shopping if you don’t feel like going into the downtown.
Tips for staying at this resort
- This is not a huge resort and since it is a more affordable one, taking some tours during your stay is a good option. Xcaret Park, Xplor and Xenses are all just about 10 minutes away by taxi. A big tip for these parks is to buy your tickets online and in advance here. You get up to 15% off if you buy in advance online. So this can be an additional savings for your vacation.
- If you need transportation to this resort from the Cancun Airport, this private transportation company is very good, plus you get a discount when you book round trip.
- If you like a larger room and you are traveling with your family, it is worth upgrading to a Family Garden view room or Family Ocean view room.
- You can book with the Allegro Playacar Resort here.
Who we recommend this resort for
This resort is good for families or young couples that want a budget friendly option for an all-inclusive resort. It is ideal for families traveling on a budget. If you are the type that enjoys a lot of time outside being active, and do not put as much emphasis on the room itself being the destination, this can be a good option for you.

There are multiple times we have visited Playa del Carmen and stayed in several resorts in Playacar. The rooms at Allegro are pretty small in the non family rooms. After a few days it gets pretty crowded in the room with a family of four. But, you are right in front of the ocean and have the pools. It is what it is. So just don’t expect luxury accommodations for the price. Most resorts are fairly prices and you are not going to get any steals. The quality of the food is always much more basic at cheap resorts. We often eat out a couple of times when in Playa because there are so many good restaurants near 5th Avenue. It is always nice to people watch also.
Thank you Katia for your comments. It seems you are an experienced traveler to the area. Your comments will surely help others plan.
We love staying here. Our kids enjoy the pools and since it is a more basic resort, we spend more on tours and activities for the kids, so it all balances out.
We were just at Allegro last week with a large group utilizing multiple rooms. This is our second time to stay here. The resort has gone downhill in the past 2 years. Multiple rooms ( including the family rooms) did not have adequately working AC, requiring a room change. Even then, the AC wasn’t adequate in one of the rooms. They currently only open one specialty restaurant every other night and only accommodate 10 people for each designated seating time. They appear to be using COVID as an excuse to limit their services. Even at budget prices, AC and hot water should be working.
