Xkopek Bee Park: Discovering the Sacred Bees of the Maya in Valladolid, Yucatán

Just outside the center of the colonial town of Valladolid, Yucatán, lies Xkopek Merlopona Bee Park, a unique ecological and cultural attraction dedicated to one of the most important creatures in Maya history: the native stingless bee. Visiting Xkopek is not just a nature outing—it is a window into ancient knowledge, sustainable practices, and the living traditions of the Yucatán Peninsula.

This is one place that we really recommend putting on your to-do list because it is fun, educational and a well put together experience. Below is everything you will experience on this tour.

Our Video Overview of This Tour

The Cultural Importance of Bees in Maya Civilization

For the ancient Maya, bees were sacred. Long before European honeybees were introduced, the Maya cultivated Melipona beecheii, a stingless species known locally as xunán kab (“royal lady bee”). These bees were essential to Maya life, providing honey used for food, medicine, ceremonial offerings, and fermented drinks such as balché.

Xkopek Bee Park exists to preserve this cultural heritage while educating visitors about the fragile ecosystem that supports native bees today. The park blends environmental conservation with cultural storytelling, making it one of the most educational attractions in the Valladolid area.

What You Can See and Learn at Xkopek Bee Park

Native Stingless Bees Up Close

One of the highlights of a visit is seeing live stingless bee colonies housed in traditional hollowed-out log hives, just as the Maya used centuries ago. Guides explain the complex social structure of the bees, how honey is produced, and why these bees are so sensitive to environmental changes.

The Difference Between Native Bees and European Honeybees

Visitors learn how native bees differ from Apis mellifera (European honeybees), which are more commonly farmed today. While native bees produce much smaller quantities of honey, their honey is highly prized for its medicinal properties and deep cultural significance.

Medicinal and Ceremonial Uses of Honey

Xkopek places strong emphasis on the traditional medicinal uses of stingless bee honey, which has been used for generations to treat eye infections, respiratory illnesses, wounds, and digestive problems. Guides also explain the honey’s ceremonial role in Maya spiritual life.

Interactive Exhibits and Demonstrations

The park features hands-on learning areas where visitors can:

  • See different types of hives
  • Learn how honey is harvested sustainably
  • Understand the threats bees face from pesticides, deforestation, and climate change
  • Discover modern conservation efforts in the Yucatán

Tasting Native Bee Honey

Tours include a honey tasting, allowing visitors to sample stingless bee honey, which has a thinner texture and more complex, citrus-like flavor than commercial honey. You will also get to try some of the honey-based products such as lotion or natural remedies.
