At the beginning of 2023 the mayor of Playa Del Carmen started an initiative to transform the lighting system in Playa Del Carmen. The objective was to improve mobility and lighting, with quality services, based on high technology that allows permanent remote monitoring.

One of the things that many point to as lacking is the speed at which infrastructure is attended to in the city. Since Playa Del Carmen has grown so much in the past decade, some 103%, there is always a need to catch up with the services for residents. This program is a good initiative to help with transit and street lighting.

Playa Del Carmen’s infrastructure is being renewed and modernized. Not only with the 52 smart intersections, but also with lighting.  To date there has been the installation of 7 thousand lights installed, so the government headed by President Lili Campos works daily so that the most of 333 thousand inhabitants of this municipality have quality services and live better.

Teresita Flota Alcocer, Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works, highlighted that the issue of smart intersections is a comprehensive work, both in Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras. “In this comprehensive infrastructure work, the important thing is that it is safe for pedestrians in the first instance, followed by cyclists, motorcyclists and finally motorists.”

She stressed that these intersections are located on main avenues where they have been considered 52 most important in the city. “With a previous study, it was detected that there were a large number of accidents, so it was determined to do the mobility study using video cameras that are monitoring and then make the crossing with a modeling of how this area should function in all aspects.”

These 7 thousand lights are located in: Centro, CTM, Avenida 115, Colosio, Zazil-Ha, Misión de las Flores, Palmas, Villas del Sol, among others,” highlighted the secretary.

He said that in some areas they were in complete darkness, thus also responding to the request of the citizens, since they are arteries heavily traveled by motorists, “depending on the need and the flow of vehicles, they were placed in the different neighborhoods, thus saving energy. so that the resource is invested in security and other infrastructure items.

One of the companies the city is working with is Signify. They are a global leader in smart lighting providing commercial and consumer lighting products that are energy efficient.
