Corner stores hold a special place in Mexico. Not only are they convenient to go to but they are part of the social structure of a neighborhood. It once was that many people did not have large refrigerators and the neighborhood store was like the pantry. Today they still offer daily hot tortillas where neighbors come and buy for the daily meals, cool drinks for the hot days and individual candies for kids. They seem to have a little of everything and over time they have seen what people need and carry just the item you might need.
We wanted to bring you this interview with Maria Hernandez who is the owner of Mini Super Oasis at the corner of 6th street and 15th Avenue. We hope this gives you a little insight into the daily life of people in Playa Del Carmen. If you are in the area why not stop in and say hi. It is a good store to get a fresh drink or try some Mexican candies. Maria does speak some English so don’t feel shy to stop in.
How long have you been in Playa Del Carmen?
I have been living here for 18 years.
How long have you been a store owner?
Twelve years now.
Why did you want to own a store?
I did not want to work all my life and creating and owning a business was a plan for the future.
How many people work at the store?
Right now it is just me and my dad.
How many hours a week do you work?
I work about 50 hours. I am at the store 6 days a week. I break up the day with my dad working some.
What makes your store special?
The prices are good of course! We sell a lot of individual Mexican candy and we have a little of everything. 
What is the most popular thing you sell?
Chocolate is the most popular and also drinks.
Why are corner store so popular?
You don’t have to wait in line and they are close to your house. It saves you time. If you go to some large grocery stores it is crazy and it take a long time.
What do you like to do on your day off?
I like to go to the beach just south of the Cozumel Ferry Pier. I like that beach because there are not as many people there.
What is your favorite restaurant to eat at in Playa Del Carmen?
I like Bip Bip on 5th Avenue and Constituyentes Avenue. I like it because it is not too expensive and it has a nice atmosphere.
What is your best advice for tourist?
Have fun and try a lot of activities like snorkeling or go dancing at Coco Bongo night club.
