Old Churches of the Yucatan

Church in Yucatan

Old Churches in the Yucatan Peninsula Mexico

With the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the early 1500’s came the construction of Churches. Often times these were made from dismantling Mayan temples and using the stones that were precut for the new construction. In some places you can still see the stones with Mayan carvings that have been placed in church walls.

All through the Yucatan you can see these churches, one of the oldest being in Merida. Merida’s San Ildefonso Cathedral’s construction started in 1561. Most of these churches are not covered by tours since they are often in small towns with no major tourist attractions nearby. You will need a specialty tour or by renting a car and setting a rural course, you can see some of the these churches that are hundreds of years old. The faithful monuments stand to tell the story of the past and some still are used in ceremonies that fuse ancient religions together and bring communities together.

We would love to name and add locations to each church but some of the churches just stand besides the road in unnamed places. Merida, Izamal and Valladolid do hold a lot of the churches posted though.
