The Caminante Hostel (formerly Green Monkey Hostel) is one of the closest hostels to the beach in Playa Del Carmen and a great budget option for the active and beach going backpacker.
This cute little blue house can be your home away from home while you stay in Playa Del Carmen. This hostel offers private rooms and dorms, a kitchen for use, 24 reception, sitting areas, luggage storage, some air conditioning, Wi-Fi, breakfast, and travel assistance.
The hostel has been renovated and painted since it changed management. The hostel is cleaner and fresher looking. Rooms including the private rooms are clean and basic.
Rates have gone up at this hostel compared to the old rates. The thing you have to take into account is the location and being close to the beach and popular area. Dorms are about 330 pesos and up and private rooms for about 1000 pesos for two.
This is one of the best things about this hostel. It is just one block from 5th Avenue and two and a half blocks from the beach, but not just any beach, the most popular beach in Playa Del Carmen. Mamitas Beach is just down the street and it is where most of the 20-30 year old crowd likes to go. On the street going to the beach (28th St.) there are lots of places to grab a burger and several convenience stores to buy some snack and drinks for the beach. Of course if you want to pay for a beach chair or beach bed, you can just order your drinks and food there since they do not allow outside beverages. Mamitas Beach Club is right at the end of 28th St. They play good electronic groove music which you can enjoy if using the club and chairs or if you sit close enough on the beach. All beaches in Mexico are public, so where ever there are not beach chairs, you can sit.
If driving to this hostel there is on street parking. If arriving at the ADO bus station on Juarez, it is about 13 blocks away and good to take a taxi especially if it is hot. From the other ADO bus station on 12th St it is about 7 blocks away and not a back walk.
The hostel is on 1st Avenue between 22nd and 24th Streets.
