The Gay Guide to Playa Del Carmen

Gay Playa Del Carmen

This is our Everything Lesbian and Gay Playa Del Carmen Guide!! In this guide we will cover the best beaches, gay areas, shopping, preferred hotels and gay resorts, gay bars, clubs, restaurants, and places to meet and interact with locals.

We found the need to make this guide because people kept asking us for one because an online search often comes up with only one bar or outdated information as well as incomplete and not informative info about gay life and tourism in Playa Del Carmen.

Gay Playa Del Carmen Guide

Never has the time been better to visit Playa Del Carmen for the LBGT community. Playa (as it is known to the locals) is a welcoming place that is very integrated and friendly. People are just starting to discover what others have known for a while now, Playa Del Carmen is a great destination. Playa is a beautiful Caribbean beach town/city with great restaurants, exciting nightlife, shopping, adventurous day trips and of course beautiful people from all over the world. It is becoming just as attractive as some of the other gay and lesbian destination. So why not discover Playa Del Carmen and all it has to offer!

Where are all the gays?

People will come to Playa Del Carmen and think that there are not a lot of gays especially since there is just one club listed on many sites. The fact is that there is actually a high proportion in Playa compared to other places. Part of the reason for this is because Playa Del Carmen is a youthful place that attracts many young people within Mexico to look for employment in the large resorts.

Many dancers, acrobats and hospitality jobs are filled by young gay people looking for an exciting life. It also does not hurt that Playa Del Carmen is a fabulous place with almost everything a gay person could want, shopping, beach, parties, gorgeous people, great places to eat, and warm weather all year.

So why are there not more people out at night? The answer is a two-part response.

  1. It is part the working lifestyle and conditions in Playa Del Carmen.
  2. The other part is the fact that Playa Del Carmen is so intergraded between straight and gay.

Cost of going out in Playa Del Carmen

Let talk about the first factor. Part of the reason people do not go out all the time is the fact that most people work 5 1/2 to 6 days a week and going out a lot is not that conducive to working the next day.

It is also expensive to go out for a lot of people. Many people make 400-600 pesos a day. That is only about $25-$40 USD. Going out to have some casual drinks and taking a taxi home is going to cost you 20-50% of your pay for the day. So this is another factor why people do not go out as much and get together with friends at someone’s house. It is also why beer is by far the most popular drink at bars because it is more affordable at about 40 pesos.

Playa Del Carmen is very mixed between gay and straight

The other reason that gay people are not at one club because Playa Del Carmen is very integrated. Many bars and clubs can be a nice place to hang with both gay and straight friends. This means when you are visiting, enjoy going out to a place that you would like, and you will be pleasantly surprised that you find a mixed crowd. However, there are more of a concentration of the GLBT crowd at the following places in our gay bar and club guide below.

Gay Bars and Clubs in Playa Del Carmen

Club 69

This gay club was the first and the longest running gay club in Playa Del Carmen. After going downhill for a while, it has closed.

Provenza Club

This is the latest gay friendly/gay bar in Playa Del Carmen. Here you can find drag shows and go-go dancers. This club is on 32nd Street between 5th Avenue and 10th Avenue. It is open daily from 7:00pm-2:00am. Here is a link to their Facebook page for current events and nights.

Gay Playa Del Carmen

La Cueva Bar

This is a gay strip bar. It does not really get started until after midnight. This bar is a casual place to hang out (think dive bar). It is not that popular but gets a small crowd of mainly locals. People enjoy going here just to sit with friends or enjoy the show.

Strippers do go all the way down to the nude here and you can see everything! Drinks are actually very reasonably priced. What is different is the fact that you do not need to tip the dancers (of course if you place some money on stage or hand them something, it will be appreciated). There is a price list on the menu for lap dances, private lap dances or spending time with dancers.

You can check out their Facebook page for special events and new featured dancers. This bar is not in the center of Playa but close to the downtown. A taxi is the best way to get to this club since it is a little off the beaten path.

Coco  Bongo

This huge Las Vegas like show and club will keep you entertained for four hours. Since this is mainly only a show for tourist, it does not get locals, but there is always about 10-15% gay people in the audience having fun. There is a fair amount gay people that work there and local guides and promoters that take people there. Since this club is more about the show it is not really a dance club. There are intervals of shows and then popular music is played. You can mingle some here but mainly people stay  in their spot for viewing the show. After the show ends at 3:15am the club becomes just music and people mingle more but this place is really about the show, so after it many people head out to other places.

Gay Events and Parties in Playa Del Carmen

Arena Circuit Party is in late January and into the first part of February in Playa Del Carmen.  It is six days and 13 parties long. It draws a crowd from around Mexico as well as international crowd. This is a good excuse to get to Playa Del Carmen when it is winter in most places. The next Arena event will be held on Cozumel. See dates below. Here is a link to the official party Facebook page.

Arean Gay festival Playa Del Carmen

Halloween and the Day of the Dead has become a major party in Playa Del Carmen. All of 5th Avenue becomes one big costume party and all the gays come out to party because it is a fun time. At about 11:00pm all the children go home and the adults head to 12th Street between 10th Avenue and the beach to party until late. Costumes bend genders and everyone can dress like anything on this day! Check out photos from Halloween in Playa here.

When is Gay Pride in Playa Del Carmen?

Gay Pride is usually in June in Playa Del Carmen. It is not a very big event. Usually there is a small procession through town and a small bar event that day. Cancun also does not have much for Gay Pride. Locally the city of Merida has the biggest events. In Mexico the biggest Gay Pride is in Mexico City.

Gay Playa Del Carmen Beaches

Gay beach in Playa Del Carmen

Everyone wants to go to the beach in Playa Del Carmen and the beaches do not disappoint. Anytime is a nice time to go to the beach but Sundays especially get more people since that is the main day people have off.

There are two main beaches in Playa that are popular with the LGBT community. The most popular beach is Mamitas Beach and just to the north of the beach club (see photo above for what it looks like). When you walk 28th Street down to the beach turn left and you will see Mamitas Beach Club there. Walk past the club and the sandy stretch past it is a popular place for people to go and hang out. This is the middle arrow on the map to the left.  Not only are there very beautiful people from all over the world, you also get to hear some of the music coming from Mamitas Beach Club.  Just remember even if it does not look that gay, a lot of the men and women are gay!

Gay Beaches Playa Del Carmen
Where the gay beaches are in Playa Del Carmen

On the bottom part of the map and south end of Playa you have the second beach option. This beach is in front of the private Playacar neighborhood. This beach is popular with the local LGBT crowd because you can go with friends and just relax without a lot of tourists. The beach is wider, and the ocean quality is good here as well. To get to the beach, walk to the Cozumel Ferry Pier and go south on the beach for about 4 minutes. It will be a little wider there and there are small palm trees planted there. It is just after the Xaman Ha Hotel.

If you see the arrow at the top of the map (yellow and orange), this is the “gay” beach in Playa. The beach area is an abandoned stretch of beach between two big condo/hotel complexes. However, it gets very few people and the main reason people go here is to lay out naked or go into the bushes and see who is there. In the slower season this beach only gets a few people, but you never know who you might meet there. There are beach patrols and police that go up the beach but mostly do not bother people, but we have had reports of them stopping, so just keep it decent when patrols pass. Since this beach area is between two multi-million-dollar developments, the security presence is to keep the area safe or make people feel safe and not really to crack down on people relaxing.

To get to this beach you can walk all the way north past Paradisus Hotel and out to the point if you want to but it will take about 25 minutes. There is a public beach access road from 5th Avenue near to about 112th St. You can walk up 5th Avenue or take a taxi to the road. Taxis will only drop you off at the entrance to the road and not drive down it because usually there is parking and traffic from local beach goers and it becomes hard to turn around. Walk down the beach access road and turn left. Walk around the point and almost to the large white and black condo buildings.

Afternoons, late afternoons and weekends are the best time to visit this beach. On Sundays many families visit the nearby beaches so you will have less privacy. There are sometimes local fisherman here as well but they don’t bother anyone.

Gay Friendly Beach Clubs

If you want to enjoy the beach but with some amenities, then hitting a beach club is a great option.

Mamitas Beach Club is popular because of the good music and trendy atmosphere. They have beach chairs, umbrellas and beds available. You will often see a group of guys or girls rent one bed and spend the day laying around and having drinks. This club gest the young and fabulous crowd.

Most of the beach clubs are pretty friendly, but the more popular ones tend to be from Constituyentes north to CTM Avenue.

Rooftop pools that attract a gay crowd

In recent years rooftop pools in Playa Del Carmen have become popular. This is due to the fact that more hotels added them, and the beach has not been in the best shape. Here are a few rooftop pools you can check out and what each one is like. All of these are open to the public.

  • BePlaya. This was one of the first rooftop pools open in Playa. It is smaller and has a shallow pool. Sometimes there are DJs on the weekend. The vibe is more chill and quieter. Normally this rooftop gets more locals and ages 25-36.
  • 3B Hostel. This is a hostel on the south end of Playa Del Carmen. Sundays are the days to party on the roof. Expect young international crowd that will remind you of a frat party.
  • Purobeach at The Fives Downtown Hotel. Trendy pool with chill electro music and good food.
  • Thompson Hotel on 12th Street. This rooftop is the most upscale. Here you can rent cabanas. The view is great and a long-curved pool lines the building. This crowd is more upscale and gets people from around 28-46 years old.

Gay Friendly Gyms and Fitness

There are two main gyms in Playa Del Carmen that are popular and good options for a day pass guest, The Gym and Evolve Gym.

Evolve Gym is just a few blocks away at 5th Avenue and 24th Street. This gym is popular with the LBGT crowd as well. Both gyms are busier after 6pm since many people get off around 5:00pm and hit the gym. An alternative is another Evolve Gym located on 6th Street between 30th Avenue and 35th Avenue. This gym has the cheapest day pass but no air-conditioning. This gym does however get a local crowd of dancers, gymnast and other workers in the tourism sector that cannot pay for the more expensive gyms. For more on gyms in Playa Del Carmen check out our gym guide.

The Gym is located on 1st Avenue between 16th Street and Constituyentes Avenue.  Day passes are normally 200 pesos. If you are in town for 15 days or longer, ask what options they have for the use of the gym.

Gay Shopping in Playa Del Carmen

There are two shopping centers in the downtown area of Playa that are popular with GLBT community. Paseo Del Carmen is on the south end of 5th Avenue. It has mid-expensive shopping stores. The other is the Quinta Alegria Mall on 5th Avenue and Constituyentes Avenue. This is a two-story shopping center that is semi air-conditioned.

The Plaza Las Americas Mall in Playa Del Carmen gets a good percentage of local gay community shopping and walking around. There are also two stores that appeal to gay guys clothes shopping in this mall.

There is the store below which is in a small plaza located on 6th street between 10th Avenue and 15th Avenue.

Gay store in Playa Del Carmen
This is one store that features gay popular merchandise.

For everything else you can search our shopping information section which covers souvenirs and other good finds in Playa Del Carmen.

Gay Friendly hotels and Gay resorts

There is not “one exclusively gay hotel” in Playa Del Carmen or the Riviera Maya for that matter. The reason for this is because there is such an assortment of hotels and places to stay that everything is very integrated. There was one in Tulum that was a gay resort, but it was short lived. So, some older guides might have it, but there are no more exclusively gay hotels.

There are two hotels that are popular in Playa, and they sponsor the two annual gay parties. These hotels fill up with patrons during this time. One is the Reina Roja Hotel which is a modern hotel artistically decorated just off 5th Avenue on 20th St. The Palm Hotel is on 8th street between 5th Avenue and 10th Avenue. Both hotels have roof top pools and friendly service. The Palm Hotel in our opinion is more popular hotel since it is newer and has a better roof top. Sometimes there are even gay pool parties on the roof (more in the summer months).

If you wanted to stay in Playa Del Carmen and have access to clubs, beaches and dinning, then you might choose a hotel between 10th Street to CTM Avenue.  Of course, location of where you stay, this is why we wrote the guide on where to stay in Playa Del Carmen, complete with map

All-inclusive hotels and gay resorts

There are many all-inclusive hotels in and around Playa Del Carmen. These can offer good value and offer an easy week with no planning. For LGBT travelers we recommend two things for you.

  1. If you want to have access to Playa Del Carmen and going out to clubs and restaurants, there are two all-inclusive hotels in the heart of Playa (Grand Porto and Royal) and all-inclusive resorts in the Playacar section of Playa Del Carmen. Being close makes it easy to walk or take a short and inexpensive taxi to go out. You can kind of have the best of both worlds, all-inclusive resort but still have access to vibrant downtown Playa.
  2. We recommend larger all-inclusive hotels in general because they have better entertainment, bigger pools and more of a variety of people to meet. The only thing we would suggest you avoid is family resorts with lots of young children only because there will be less likeminded people and if you wanted to sit and talk with other gay and lesbian travelers there will be less at these types of resorts.

One all-inclusive resort that is popular with gays is the Paradisus Hotel. This hotel is on the north end of Playa Del Carmen and not really walking distance into town. It does require a taxi. There are two hotels under the Paradisus name in Playa Del Carmen. One is adult only and one is for families, so book according. There are many gay couples and singles that stay at this upscale resort.

Insider tip: All-inclusive hotels hire thousands of people and there are many gay and lesbians that work at the hotels (the actual number might be shocking to some but the lure of working in the Caribbean draws thousands from all over Mexico and the world to work and many are LGBT) Many are bilingual and work in entertainment at the resorts. You will have friendly interaction with them throughout your day by the pool and at shows. This can be a nice way to meet locals.

If you want to spend more time with staff, it is strictly forbidden for staff to be on the property after working hours or visit guest rooms. If they live on the property, it is strictly forbidden to have guest to their rooms.  These policies are very much enforced so if you meet someone friendly why not suggest spending some time off the resort property when they have off.

Gay Friendly Hostels

Coming to Playa Del Carmen on a budget? You will be happy to know that there are some cool hostels and a good variety to fit your style. All of them are gay friendly and you will be surprised just how many gay and lesbian travelers stay at hostels. Here are just a few of the best.

  • Hostel Che. This hostel is a popular with Argentinian and other backpackers looking for a chill place but with a lot of interaction between guests. Hostel Che is on Calle 6 between 15th and 20th Avenues.
  • Hostel 3B is a new concept in hostels, a boutique hostel. It cost a little more but makes you feel like you are at somewhere stylish. Rooms are comfortable and best of all there is a rooftop pool and lounge. This hostel is at the south end of town so you might walk a little more, but it is one of the nicest hostels in Playa and friendly. http://www.hostel-playa-del-carmen.com/

There are many other smaller independent hotels that range in budget in Playa Del Carmen and also all-inclusive hotels. We do have a general hotel guide for Playa Del Carmen and the Riviera Maya just to help narrow it down between the hundreds of hotels.

Cruising and Meeting Locals

Here are some non-club and bar places where you can meet locals and other tourist. The main pedestrian street of 5th Avenue (or Quinta as it is known in Spanish) is always popular. During the day you will see people walking in bikinis and speedos going to the beach or coming up to buy something to munch on. It is a very casual street. The best time however is from 6:00pm-10:00pm when many guys and gals go out for a walk. It is also when more people are off work, and the street gets more crowded. Later in the evening people get settled into restaurants and bars and it is not as popular to be walking around and you will have less of a chance to meet people.

Gay Playa Del Carmen
Just another day on 5th Avenue in Playa Del Carmen

On 5th Avenue there are a few places that are popular sitting and watching. Most coffee houses are popular. The Starbucks on 5th Avenue at 10th Street has guys sitting out front sometimes.  The other Starbucks on 5th Avenue and 28th Street is also a popular sitting area for guys and gals. There are two Ah Cacao coffee shops that are good locations as well. One is on 5th Avenue at Constituyentes Avenue and the other is on 5th Avenue and 30th Street.

Another café to note is the Chou Chou Café. This is one of the best places in Playa Del Carmen for a coffee and you might also see some nice locals. This café and restaurant is on 20th Avenue near the corner of 24th Street. See our link for more information.

Grocery stores are always popular because everyone has to go, and you never know who you might meet. Mega grocery store is the more popular store for tourist and expats. Walmart is also good to shop at. Walmart gets some beach bikini and surf short shoppers during the day fresh off the beach and looking for snacks. Shopping never looked so good.

30th Avenue is also a busy street where you can meet locals from 5:30pm-9:30pm. This street is the main bus line route and after work many people are traversing here. From 8th street until 20th Street is the best section of 30th Avenue for meeting people.

Note: Also see the beach section for tips.

Gay Saunas and Meeting People

There have been saunas in Playa Del Carmen, but all are currently closed.

Xtreme Cyber Café is an “internet café” that gets a very local crowd. There are private booths and it cost 30 pesos. This type of place attracts the crowd that is going home from work and live with the family. It is close to downtown on Calle 20 between Avenue 35 and Avenue 40. There is a big sign and tinted windows.

Massage service for guys

If you are looking for a legit massage from a masseuse that is gay friendly, here is one good option in Playa Del Carmen.

Recommended Day Trips for the LGBT Community

Since gays and lesbians are a little more adventurous here are some day trips or short overnights places, you can go to around Playa Del Carmen. There really are too many options of good places but we will tell you about some of the highlights.

There are three big eco parks nearby, Xcaret, Xplor, and Xel-Ha. These are owned by the same company but different from each other and in general we like each one. We do recommend for the adrenalin junky Xplor. It offers zip lines, underground swimming, and more! We choose this over the other parks because it is fun and many gays and lesbians go there on their day off and there are a lot of hot guys and girls that work there who are always assisting you (and yes, many gays work here). If you are in Playa in October also look for the Bravest Race at Xplor. It is a day race that attracts all the fit gays and lesbians. You will be amazed at the crowd! It cost almost the same as a regular day at the park but totally worth for several reasons (fun and sightseeing)!

Xplor, Playa Del Carmen
Zip lines at Xplor park

Xel-Ha is a snorkel park with a full day of activity. All day guys and girls walk around in bikinis and speedos. The views are great, and it is popular with local LGBT community on their day off.

Xcaret is a great park but more family oriented. Swimming in the underground rivers is great and the two hour show at the end highlights Mexican culture.

Coba Mayan Ruins is a good choice if you buy a tour or have a car (public transportation is very limited). We prefer this over Chichen Itza because it is not overrun with tour buses, and you get to bike between the ruins and climb the pyramid.

Valladolid. If you are a culture vulture and would like a small colonial city to see and maybe see a local food market, then this town has a lot to offer.

Holbox Island is a good overnight trip or a place to chill for a few days. Interestingly enough it is very popular with lesbians. This laid-back place has a few hundred residents, and everyone seems to be very chill and friendly.

Sian Ka’an is just south of Tulum and is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. (1.3 million acres) Here you can see a lot of animals and do adventurous activities like kayaking. We recommend getting a tour to visit this biosphere reserve because you cannot really see much if you go by yourself.

Cancun is the closest big city to Playa Del Carmen. You might think it would have more gay clubs, bars, and hotels but it is limited. For more on Cancun see our Gay Cancun Guide here.

Gay tour guide for exploring more of the area

  1. Hello,
Just to add something on what you said in the “GAY BEACH” section of your article. I’m talking about that abandoned stretch of beach between two big condo/hotel complexes, that hidden bushed beach where you said you can sunbathing nude without getting bothered by police…
Well, I had a not very pleasant experience last month, I was there taking a nude sunbathing not bothering nobody, also I made sure I was a bit reclusive so the people walking on beach couldn’t really see me….Then 2 cops arrived on their ATV, ordered me (not in a pleasant manner) to put on my trunk. They also asked me if I was masturbating…Ouachhh….I wasn’t, I can restrain myself.
And these 2 cops also went to see other gays that were there to check ….Check what? Search me but this experience was not funny at all, believe me…I just put my stuff on my bag and left.

    • Thank you for your personal experience. It is good to get reports like this and we will reflect this in the guide.

      • I am older but in pretty good shape would I be able to have a good time on the xplor or the Xel-Ha excursions?

        • Yes, both parks are fairly accessible. Xplor is the more physically challenging because you need to climb ladders and stairs for the towers. Xel Ha is what you make of it. You can float and walk around or swim and snorkel a lot, but much less physically demanding.

    • Do you allow pre-op TS with breast allowed in any of the gay saunas or bathhouse??? I would like to know since it’s my first time visiting Playa Del Carmen.

    • Are you referring to Playa Del Carmen and how far it is from this hotel in Cancun? Playa Del Carmen is about 50 minutes south of Cancun.

  2. Can you/anyone comment on this year’s Gay Pride in PdC? (2016, June 24-26)
When & where is the parade, any special parties or events?

    • Just to give you some background on Gay Pride in Playa Del Carmen, it is not a large event. Each year it has been attended by some but it often is not organized the best. Often there is a small parade from Juarez Avenue to 12th Street where it ends at a club for a destination party. There is a lack of organizers in Playa Del Carmen for gay events. Some people have avoided working with the Gay Pride event because it often attracts just a fringe of the gay community and sometimes it is not quite the image the City is looking for i.e young kids running around in underwear. Don’t get us wrong, Playa Del Carmen is a very gay friendly city with a much higher gay population then many places. It is just that many gay do not even attend this event because it is not done in a classy way and almost cheapens the gay community. Being in a smaller city near larger cities also sucks some the event power out of doing anything in Playa Del Carmen. Merida has a much bigger Gay Pride and if you are interested you might want to check that event out. Merida is about 3 1/2 hours away and easily reached by bus. Merida is a city of about 1,000,000 people so there is a larger crowd for that event. If we have any more details for this years event or future events we will post it here on our Gay Guide to Playa Del Carmen. We do keep every guide we have up to date all the time. Thank you for your question and we hope you have a great time in Playa Del Carmen even if you don’t attend a Pride event, we are sure you will have fun.

  3. Update on Playa Pride 2016. Playa Pride is June 16-19 and there are happenings during this period. There is a pre party June 18 at the bar on the corner of 1st avenue and 26th Street at 8pm. Open bar is 400 pesos. Sorry there is so few details about this, organization and marketing is very poor.

  4. LesMex Pre Pride Party for lesbians and gayfriendly is on June 15th at the Mexican Caribe. All info is on LesMex group on Facebook as well as in Life is a Beach Productions’ facebook page.
LesMex TomBoy is on June 16th at La Fe, starts at 9pm.
LesMex After Pride Party is on June 18th at La Soiree by Rosy Valdez, starts at 9.
    Pre Pride: Stand up comedy
TomBoy: supporting TomBoy community and encouraging Ronie on a contest
After Pride: Show by Rosy Valdez and karaoke

    • Thank you for posting this information about Gay Pride 2016 in Playa Del Carmen. We got your Facebook message and were going to post this info here. 8. By far this is the best gay guide to the area. I had no idea that there was a gay community or what to expect. This is so detailed. I wish you had a guide to every place in MExico.

    • Hello. No there are still the same gay bars that are listed here. There is not a lot of demand for one purely gay bar since it is so integrated in Playa Del Carmen. We will keep you posted through.

  9. Is there anything going on the week of Nov 12th? I’ll be visiting with my partner and trying to do something for his birthday. Any ideas?

  10. Is there any paradiso this year for the end of November. It has been cancelled this year?ill be there November 19 to 26

    • Hello Francois

It took a while to track down the info. Paradiso will not be any more done. The only circuit party now is Arena. Things come and go here and advertising for these events is poor. We have tried to email them and they do not get back to us event though we have the largest gay guide for the area. We hope you have a good stay here and enjoy some features of our guide. Let us know if you need anything else.

  11. any advice on queer mexican backpacker who can´t afford to spend that much money, and is going next week with her 2 straight best friends and don´t want to miss out the chance to meet some cute girl, local or foreign?

    • Sure, here is some advice. You can take a blanket to the beach at Mamitas and have drinks for free as long as you are in front of the chair area. This is a very popular place especially on Sundays. You can meet people here. You can also go out to bars like Delores Yucabar and have a drink for 60 pesos or a beer for 40 pesos.
You can walk on 5th Avenue but you don’t really meet people there. There are a lot of tourist and it is not the best environment to meet people.
You can go to the beach at Xpu Ha and meet people too. It is a beach just south of Playa and you can take the colectivos there. The gay and lesbian scene is very mixed so everywhere you go you can meet people.
We hope you have a great time here. Let us know if after you come here you have any tips for our readers.

  12. I have been spending some time in the south, & just came up to Playa tonight. It is very cruisey on 5th, with many gay prostitutes, who may not be obvious to straight tourists. I was just sitting eating dinner on 5th watch the crowd go by, with many many obvious foreign gay tourists, when one very cute local guy caught my eye. He saw me looking & made direct eye contact, I looked away embarassed as he was very much younger than me. Then he got on his phone texting & for the next 30 minutes local guys of many different types including cross dressers paraded past me on 5th trying to make eye contact to see if I was interested. It was not obvious to other straight US tourists eating there, but it was to the waiter who became very unfriendly & hurried my dinner to get me out of his restaurant.

    • Thanks for your trip report and experiences. You may have just experience more of a local flirt. We are not saying there are gay guys looking to pick a tourist for money, but many Mexican guys like foreigners just to meet. Even when it might seem like a sizable age difference there is always the daddy complex. In Mexico there is prejudice and many status groups do not date down. Most mixed Mexicans will not date someone who looks more indigenous and it is almost a status symbol to date a foreigner. Regardless of this, we hope you enjoyed your time here in Playa Del Carmen.

  13. I am traveling with my gay best friend. we are presently in cozumel and the city is beautiful but so far has presented very few options for my friend. Is there anything fun that can be done during the day, we are limited by the last ferry, besides the beaches. suggestions would be welcomed.

    • Hello Kamila

Just to make sure we got what you said, you want to come to Playa Del Carmen for a daytrip and then be able to return to Cozumel at night, correct. Mamitas is fun for the day and there is a mixed crowd there. It is not like there are gay clubs open in the day or even one place in the city where to meet other gay people during the day. The beach is good and strolling 5th after 4:30ish is nice because it is cooler and more people come out to walk around. If you go to Mamitas you can use the showers and get semi ready to go back to 5th Avenue. Most of the bars are not busy until 10 at earliest so there is not good option there. On 28th street there are some bars and eateries that are semi mixed places and with some drinks you just might strike up a conversation with the next table to you.

  14. Hola, thank you so much for keeping this site up to date. I was in Playa for a week this past December and will be back for 2 weeks this month. I’m glad that you added La Cueva Del Maya T and Sodoma Playa to the list. They are both definitely local and I think I was the only gringo there the few times I went to each but I had a great time. La Cueva Del Maya T is a little pricey- $100 pesos for a small vodka drink but that might have been the gringo price. When the club “closed” the strippers started walking around and I got the feeling that they were for hire. I didn’t stay long enough to find out but I’ll be back in about a week so I’ll let you know!

    • Thanks Matt. You might have notices on the drink menu that there are different prices for meeting the dancers. For example they do private dances in the back. If you are older, then you will get more attention because there is more a chance to payment for services. At any rate, it can be a casual fun bar with straight and gay friends to hang out.

  15. Hi Team! I went with my partner on Monday 6/3 night at 22:45 to 69 and two guys hanging around told us it was closed despite the door being open and music thumping from it. They then offered us all the drugs under the sun with free samples. Not my scene, sorry, so off we went to the two bars on 12th, between 1st and the beach. The Hidden Bar and Delores Yucabar were impossible to find. It would help if the description described which side of the road they were on (north or south). The whole district is noisy and we were constantly offered drugs. We gave up and took our money back to the hostel. I am not bothering to go to the strip bar near our hostel. I have had a better time in Puerto Vallarta three years running and even Oaxaca and Zona Rosa in MC. I hope your town gets a better more open scene for all the resident and visiting gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, questioning and queer folk. Sorry I’m from London and totally spoilt. Thanks for your great up to date website. Another place (mentioned in another site) Blue Parrot on the beach at end of 12th is closed for removation right now. Also could you change your order of messages displayed so most recent us at the top please (it looks out of date as it is), thanks.

    • Hello

Sorry you guys are having a bad time finding a fun time in Playa Del Carmen. We do mention that Bar 69 is not the best and only good visiting on Friday or Saturday night. The Hidden Bar is on the south side of the street across from Vaquita. Next to it are the stairs that go up to Dolores Yucabar. It is the bar with the dead tree coming out of the second floor.
Playa Del Carmen is very mixed and you can find gay and straight in many of the clubs. Try Mamitas Beach on the north side of the club and in front of the beach chairs. You can meet many people there.
We will see if we can rearrange the comments. We think since you last looked we took off the Blue Parrot since they are closed now and will become a hotel. Vallarta is known for more of a scene although Playa is gaining in rank and more and more gays and lesbians are coming.

  16. Just wanted to know if there is a lot of open discrimination? I have a very feminine style (heels and makeup) but I am male. It’s all very trendy and designer stuff but I have a look. All my friends are straight so I believe we be frequenting the major clubs mostly. Any experiences?

    • You most likely will not be discriminated in a way of refusal of services but people might make a cat call or stare. That is pretty much similar to many places in the world. Less so in places like NYC where there it is more common to see a guy in heels and makeup. People are accepting and not really discriminatory. If a big woman walked down 5th Avenue in Playa in a bikini people would look and make comments. It is more because it is something different and conversational.

  17. How are the bars, and especially gay bars, since the violence last month? Where deos the crowd from La Santanera go now? Thanks for this awesome guide!

    • Hello Tio

The scene has not changed too much. We are going into low season so there are fewer people out. The Santanera crowd is spread around but more into the smaller bars. Some of the hotels have rooftop bars and once a month parties, so this is trendy for the trendy crowd. There is nothing that is regular so we have not posted any of the monthly parties because they change weekly and you never know what is going to come up. That is just part of the hard part of trying to write about the area. People often do not market well.

      • Where is the best place to check weekly parties? Do they advertise in shop windows or somewhere regular? Thank you Mr!

        • Unusually you have to check facebook pages of each hotel. You can check out the Carmen Hotel, Live Aqua and Thompson Hotel. Also the Roof Club at the Palm Hotel is good during the day.

  18. Hidden Bar posted on Facebook that it is closed in February. Sodoma Playa is also closed. Is 69 the only one left? I am going in 2 weeks and am feeling like there will be no gay party.

    • Don’t despair, there is still the same amount of guys in Playa, they are just not at the places that are closed. Make sure you visit Mamitas beach during the day and especially the weekend. You are sure to meet people , have drinks and a good time.

  19. I just found this site and have read comments, recommendations. My partner and myself are headed to Playa Del Carmen and staying at Viva Wyndham Maya. Not familiar with the lay of the land, is there anything gay close by?

    • You will be staying in the Playacar section of town. This is outside of the downtown. You can walk into town and be on 5th Avenue in about 20 minutes or take a taxi. The beaches are always with a little mix and since there are large hotels nearby there are always a lot of tourist on the beaches there.

  20. hi, travelling with 11 Gay guys to Playa del Carmen (allegro playacar) from 28.5.-11.6.17. Seems we will miss Gay Pride. what a pity!!! any other Events or tipps for this period? thanks

    • We just added one new weekly event at El Jardin Restaurant. It is a simple drag show. It could be a fun night out and a place to have dinner or drinks. Other then that, Playa is very mixed. You might check out one of the new rooftop pools/bars like Deck 5 at the Carmen Hotel on Calle 8.

    • I’ll be in playa with my boyfriend for the same period, if you discover sth nice let us know.

  21. I am coming to Playa in Maya and need to find some venue for some gay events. Do you think you could email me some details and options? It has to be gay friendly bars, restaurants and roof tops if possible.

    • Hello M. Milgen

We will send you a list of places to your email. Make sure you check your spam filter so it does not get lost. We will send this to you in one hour.

  22. My partner and I are a mature male couple ( 46 & 60), and are curious to know if there are any beach clubs, gay bars/clubs, etc. in Playa or any of the Yucatan that attract a 40+ crowd. We will be vacationing in Playa Del Carmen in mid May, staying at the Grand Hyatt, just looking for any tips or recommendations that you can give, thanks.

    • Hello Alex
Mamitas just north of your hotel is a very popular beach club for gay people. There is a wide age range as well. It is very mixed so you will have to see what groups are who. The bar 69 is younger and not the best attended. Playa is very mixed, so a lot of bars will be visited by guys. That is general advice but the truth. It always seems that if you are searching you will not find it and if you go about your vacation and do what you want to do, you meet other people that have the same interest and you can strike up a conversation. We hope you have a great time here. Let us know if you need anything else.

  23. Is the Gay Sauna still open? People tell me it is hard to find. What does the building look like? Any Signs? Thanks

    • The sauna near Juarez is open for sure because the owner just sent us the current pricing. There are no signs and does have certain hours. It is a walled house with a drive way into it. There might be a sign inside the courtyard you can see on the house.

  24. Hello. I recently visited Playa del Carmen and even though it was lower travel season I was surprised at how open Playa is. I saw guys holding hands and on the beach couples next to other couples and everyone just go on. It is not the macho society one expects in Mexico. I am glad to see views are much nicer then expected. Playa should get a good reputation for being gay friendly.

  25. Looking forward to Gay Pride in Playa Del Carmen this year. I hope it is better then other years.

  26. Is there a high heel race this year? If so when , where does it start and what time???

    Thanks,
    Mel

    • Hello Melanie

We have not heard of one for this year. We guess you are referring to Gay Pride in Playa Del Carmen. It is getting better organized so there are more events and more integrated into the society of Playa. We hope you get to attend if you are around.

  27. We are thinking of coming to Playa del Carmen but have not seen much advertised for gay places to go? What is the current situation there?

    • Hello Preston

Well, there is still the one 100%gay bar and other bars that are mixed. There are less overall bars and clubs open but more hotels have been opening with rooftops and parties. Unfortunately these events are random, so it is hard to advertise them. You can checkout the Facebook page of Carmen Hotel, Reina Roja Hotel and the Palm Hotel for events and rooftop parties.

  28. There is a new gay sauna in town. It is Adonis Gay Sauna, located on Sian Kaan Street #29, quite close to 28 de Julio Avenue. The venue was closed for a time, but it is now open, and facilities are comfortable and clean, with a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a dark room, lockers, showers, etc. Good-looking young guys tend to go here more frequently than other sites. The cost is $150 pesos (some $9 USD).

      • sounds very nice i will go to playa next month
hau muts mony will the boys ask for if you like a nice time whit them

        • You won’t be approached usually but you can go online. Both apps and websites will have a wide range of amounts. There is more official and less official offers.

  29. I’ll be in cancun early october for business but was intrigued at the possibility of spending a few days in Playa del Carmen after reading your article. I’ll be traveling alone, however. Any helpful advice will be much appreciated!

    • Hello Karl

Well are article has about everything in it. If you have more specific questions we can give you more guidance. Basically if you are coming for a few days you should stay in the center of Playa so you can walk around. The best location is near 5th Avenue between 8th Street and 30th Street. Mamitas beach is always an attraction and if you want to go out, you are also in the center of the action.

    • We believe this bar is closed. The post they had on their Facebook page was over a year ago. That is the problem with Facebook, people just leave pages open there and do not update them.

  30. I have stopped by Playa Del Carmen on preveous trips. I did not see that many gay guys but I think it is more integrated so I will stop by some of these places next time.

  31. I am a 34 year old guy coming from France to Playa Del Carmen in January 20-25. Any other folks will be there?, be sure to shoot me an email if interested in coffee or tours or beach.

  32. Hey, great post highlight LGBT attractions in Playa. I’m coming with a gaggle of 10 boys for New Years, staying a week. Any fun events to check out? gay and non-gay

    • There is always a little scene on Mamitas beach on the north end but everywhere you go it is very mixed. There is not one highlight gay event or place to checkout. We hope you have a fun time here and a good New Years.

  33. Thanks for this great guide! My partner and I (24 and 27) are staying in PDC for 10 days starting this Saturday!
Is there anything fun going on that we should know about between December 31 and Jan 8?

    • Hello and welcome to Playa Del Carmen! There is a big holiday called New Years Eve that happens here. hahahah It is a lot of fun! Walking around near 12th st and 5th is popular and very mixed. The next day on the beach you can check out Mamitas. There will be lots of people in the afternoon just chilling there. Most of the big music festivals are not taking place this year, so beyond New Years Day and recovery, why not get out and visit a cenote or side trip somewhere. There are a lot of cool places to visit.

  34. We are in our 60s and will be visiting the Playa in Feburary. Are there places you would recommend for us to stay outside the town that are gay friendly? It does not have to be cheap but “reasonable..” Also, what’s the name of the sauna for massage?

    • There are some resorts that are more popular with gay people. Paradisus is one but not that far out of town. Mayakoba is another higher end resort that is popular. Some of the larger resorts get thousands of people so there is always a small percentage of gays and lesbian guest. Barcelo and Sirenis are big resorts that can se a mixed crowd. The two saunas in Playa are here in this guide.

  35. Hello! I will be arriving into Cozumel on a cruise ship early March on a Wednesday. Do you recommend checking out the gay beach options here if I only have about 6 hours to spend? Or— best to just find a nice beach club in Cozumel? thanks for the advice!

    • There is not much going on at the beaches in Cozumel. Maybe play it by the weather. If it is sunny and nice, cruise over to Playa and make you way to Mamitas. Have some drinks and spend some time on the beach. You will find a very international crowd there. If it is not that nice of a day, just walk around a little on Cozumel and or stay on the ship.

  36. I will be arriving on March 16th with a friend we are both from Connecticut and would like to make friends with other gay people that are visiting in that time frame for drinks/laughs/etc
Send an email, and let’s hang out

  37. Hello middle aged gay couple here, will be staying at the Grand Luxxe Nov 30-Dec1 2018. Like to support businesses.
Any recommendations for airport transfers, or excursions? We will head to Playa for a day shopping too. Any chance their is a festival or something going on? Maybe Art walk?

    • Hello Dan

We have an article here on a friendly transport company. They are very good and have good prices. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cancun-airport-transfers/ For shopping and coming to Playa you might want to come on a Thursday. That is when artist set up on 5th Avenue between 26-32 street. You can find some good art then or if you come on another night, often there are artist on the south side of Quinta Alegria Mall on 5th neat 16th Street. Alberto Fumora is one artist there that does watercolors in kind of a pop art style. He is just one of the friendly artist you will find there. We hope you have a fun time.

  38. I will be staying at The Royal in PDC next week. Is this resort gay friendly? Also, can you suggest any fun bars and restaurants popular with the LGBT community?

    • The Royal is not know as a gay hotel or notably gay friendly. That does not mean it is anti gay, it is just indifferent. The Royal attracts mainly people 28-55 who make around 30-50 thousand USD a year. Paradisus is a higher end resort on the north end of Playa that has a much higher gay occupancy rate. Most of the resorts in Playa Del Carmen including Playacar are all about the same as far as gay visitors.
As far as bars and restaurants, the best recommendations are here in the article. Playa is very mixed and it is more divided by economics rather than sexual preference. The only new place we need to add to the guide is the Purobeach rooftop pool club. This attracts a higher percentage of gay guest.

  39. We ended up changing our vacation dates to Oct28-Nov 4, Are their any events or sites to see during this time?
Are their any clothing optional beaches?

    • Hello Dan

There are not any special event that time of year but it is starting to get busier, so more people are around. None of the beaches are officially clothing optional. Some of the more remote ones people do lay out but beach patrols can stop and ask you to put your clothes on.

  40. We’re three gay guys who are looking for a Gay Guide who can drive us around to sites outside of Playa Del Carmen (e.g, Coba, Gran Cenote, etc). Can you connect us to interested parties? We arrive in mid January.

    • Parts of the beach are pretty good now but the parts that have seaweed normally still are not clear. Mamitas is pretty good. The gay beach on the north end was never good for swimming but is pretty clear so even if you are on the beach it does not smell like seaweed too bad.

  41. I’m going to ocean riviera paradise end of November. Any good guides or men to show me around near places or suggestions?

  42. We are two guys who will be spending a week in Puerto Vallarta in mid-January. Afterward, we will fly to Merida, were we have hired the fellow you suggested at Merida Gay Tours for 3 days. We will then spend 4 nights in Tulum, which I know will be very quiet gay-wise, but quite beautiful. We will rent a car in Tulum and would like to visit Playa Del Carmen, likely on a Sunday. Is Marmitas still the place to go to meet gays? Any other “must sees(“5th Ave., Playacar?) , in Playa for a day trip? Great place for lunch? We must return to Tulum that evening. Many thanks. Your videos and website are excellent!

    • Hello Frank

Thank is awesome you booked a tour in Merida. That should be fun. Mamitas is good because it is busy. There are also rooftop pools like the Fives Downtown but since it is smaller it can be good or quiet. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/purobeach-rooftop/ The street walking down to Mamitas has restaurant and is a nice place to people watch. That is Calle 28. 5th Avenue is nice for a walk as well. Later afternoon is good when more people are out and it is cool. Have a great time!

  43. Thanks for your reply and suggestions.
Is there a nightclub with show that is gay or mainly gay on either Sat. or Sun. nights? My traveling friend thinks there is? He’s suggesting we go from Tulum to Playa on Sat. evening for this? I’m worried about driving back to Tulum in the dark and late, esp. with a drink or two having been had? Is Sat. better than Sun. in terms of gay action? You don’t do private or small group tours, do you?

    • Hello. Saturday is better then Sunday for going out because most locals will work on Mondays, so Saturday has the most people out. There usually is a drag show at Bar 69. The drive from door to door, depending on where you are staying will be one hour from Tulum so going back at 3 am is not going to be the most fun. There are also police checkpoints so no one can drink and drive. One option is to get a basic room in Playa for the night and not stress out about the late night drive coco Bongo is a show that is a lot of fun although it is mostly straight crowd. Rauxa is a show at a hotel near Tulum that is adult and semi erotic. But there is not much interaction with other people, just a higher end dinner show. We don’t do any tours personally. We hope you have a great time whatever you do!

    • Hello Frank. We don’t do any tours but just make recommendations. There is not gay dinner show in Playa. Just the bars and shows listed. Rauxa is a dinner show that is adults only and a little erotic. It is a mixed crowd but mostly just dinner and show then off to bed.

  44. What about a place for older people? We are a gay couple in our 50s and 60s. We know gay bars are limited in Playa, what about just a straight bar where mature people would be comfortable? Some place maybe the older local crowd goes?

    • Hello Bob

You might really like the Dirty Martini bar on 1st Ave between 10th Street and 12th street. Tuesdays are very popular with the 2×1 martinis. Zenzi on the beach and 10th also has an older crowd in a setting that is good for conversations. Those are two of the best places that sound what you are looking for.

  45. Hi we are traveling Feb,9 2019 to playa del carmen staying at panama jacks my wife may be interested in a massage with a happy ending ,is hard to get locals back to the resort?
Is there a place to go to meet swingers ?

  46. I have read a comment that gringos should not go La Cueva Del Maya-T, especially if you don’t speak fluent Spanish. Should I worry? Traveling to PDC in May and will be traveling alone.

    • This is a more local bar and one they would be described as a dive bar. It is fine to go have a drink, see the show and enjoy it but there can always be problems when you are looking for drugs or prostitutes. Caution is always good to have since you are out of your element and stand out.

  47. hola ! how is the sargassum siutation in playa del carmen ?
Is there any special gay event for semana santa ?
    gracias

    • Lately the seaweed has been light in the normal areas of Playa. We just posted a video on our facebook page the other day, and you can see the water. There is no special events for gay semana santa. Just the typical places mentioned here in our guide will be popular like Mamitas beach.

  49. MUCHAS GRACIAS. DECIDIDO, IREMOS A PLAYA DEL CARMEN. LLEGAREMOS EL VIERNES 31 POR LA NOCHE Y ESTAREMOS UNA SEMANA. HAY ALGUNA FIESTA O EVENTO GAY PROGRAMADO PARA ESA SEMANA EN PUERTO DEL CARMEN QUE SEPAIS?
QUÉ ALTERNATIVAS DE OCIO GAY (PLAYA/ZONA GAY, PISCINAS GAY, SAUNAS O SIMILAR GAY, FIESTA GAY DIURNA, NOCTURNA EN FIN DE SEMANA Y NO FIN DE SEMANA, ZONAS DE ENCUENTRO GAY…) EN CADA MOMENTO NOS RECOMENDARÍAIS PARA APROVECHAR BIEN LA SEMANA AHÍ?
HACEIS UNA GRAN LABOR. GRACIAS NUEVAMENTE Y CORDIALES SALUDOS.

    • La mayoría de los lugares para conocer gente están en nuestra guía. No hay eventos especiales para el tiempo que estés aquí. Siempre están los bares, la playa y los bares de la azotea.

  50. GRACIAS DE NUEVO, POR ÚLTIMO UNAS CUESTIONES MÁS ESPECÍFICAS:
CUÁL ES EL BAR DE AZOTEA CON MÁS AMBIENTE GAY?
APARTE DEL CLUB 69 Y DE LA CUEVA DEL MAYA T, HAY ALGÚN OTRO PUB/DISCO DE AMBIENTE GAY PARA IR ENTRE SEMANA?
QUÉ ZONA DE LA PLAYA ES A LA QUE VÁN MÁS PERSONAS GAY?
    DISCULPA POR TANTA PREGUNTA…
    GRACIAS Y SALUDOS CORDIALES.

    • Lo que decimos en nuestra guía es nuestra mejor recomendación para las áreas de playa. La tendencia de la azotea es nueva. La azotea del Fives Downtown es probablemente la mejor escena y la segunda The Palm.

    • It is becoming less popular and there are patrols of police. Sometimes they stop and we are not sure if they stop people from going nude. It is safe since it is between a popular local beach and condo complex.

    • Hello Donald

Bars and clubs are not open at this time but beach clubs and social places are open. Tourism is coming back about 10% more each month and by this December we should be at about 65%. So the gay scene is coming back like everything else, just a slow process to return to normal. Although, we are much more ahead of other countries that remain closed.

  51. Now that we are into 2021, I am wondering if bars and clubs have started to open. Considering a trip down and am wondering if there are options yet.

    Does anyone have an update?

    • Hello Dave

There are bars and restaurants with bars that are open. Coco Bongo will open on March 19th, so this is a big opening that is starting to open the clubs.

  52. What is the best catamaran/sailing cruise for mature gay couples? Planning a getaway in June and we love to sail, but want to make sure that we are in a gay friendly environment with a gay friendly crew and just feel safe.

    • There really are not “more gay friendly” cruises. Everyone is pretty much equally friendly. Since there is no one gay crew or regular gay tours or cruises, they are pretty much equal. There is not much to worry about being gay as it is pretty much open.

  53. Traveling alone to Cancun soon, rental car, hotel booked…

    Sept 4 – 8 – Tulum, Central Park Lagunas
    Sept 8 – 11 -Rosewood Mayakoba

Seeking locals who can assist to drive my rental car around tulum..

  54. I’m here in Playa until Thursday and I’m gay and want to have a good fun time here. What are some recommendations for a single black gay guy trying to have fun
