What is Canibal Royal Beach Club like?

Update: May 2019: This is now closed. Canibal Royal Beach Club is tucked in the north end of Playa Del Carmen. This corner of paradise is a perfect location for this beach club because it attracts those that are looking for a lounge type environment with nice surroundings and not the hoards of people.

There are children here but most people are adults and the top floor with the small pool is adult only. The actual beach is thin now but most come for lounging. It still affords swimming and snorkeling if you care to go out to the reef beyond the boats.

Restaurant and facilities at Canibal Royal

The two story building is a retro design meets beach chic. We have a lot to say about the good design here. From the open floors overlooking the ocean, the bathroom doors that are from ships, the green roof with plants or the small pool on the roof, everything fits together seamlessly. It is great to be in a place that where so much time and thought was put into the design. This is what makes this beach club different and popular with locals.

The beach club consist of an open air bar on the first floor with loungers  and beach beds on the beach. The second floor is mainly a restaurant and provides a nice view overlooking the ocean. On the third level you will find a small dip pool. The third level is an adult only area.

Canibal Royal Menu for food and drink

The menu is seafood inspired. There are good ceviches, tostados, tacos and more are available. Custom drinks of the house are available and provide you with some tropical inspiration. The prices for food and drink are higher then some of the beach clubs in the center of town but you are buying the atmosphere, a little better quality and ocean view, so that makes it all worth it.

How to get to Canibal Royal Beach Club

To get to Canibal Royal, you have three options:

  1.  by walking up the beach from the center of Playa Del Carmen you will walk north past Mamitas Beach and look for the point where the boats are docked. It is at the tip of this point.
  2. If you come from the center of Playa Del Carmen by streets you will come down Avenue CTM toward the ocean. Go to the bottom of the street all the way to where you hit the beach and turn left. It is tucked in the corner. (It is behind the Elements building.)

You can also drive here by going down Avenue CTM (aka 46th Street).

  1. Howdy! Someone in my Facebook group shared this website with us so I came to take a look. I’m definitely enjoying the information. Fantastic blog and amazing style and design.

  2. Hi, can you tell us what the beach is like in front of Canibal Royal these days? The last time we were down there the beach as all gone. Thanks

    • The beach has taken a hit around Canibal Royal lately. The good news is that they have used the property to the south of them to expand the beach club and there is a little more space. There is also a new beach club near 44th Street that has just opened and it has lots of space but not the same vibe as Canibal Royal. Of all the beaches in front of Playa Del Carmen, Coco Beach has had some seaweed but on some days it is fine.

  3. I am glad Canibal Royal has some more beach. It was looking it all there for a while. I like this beach club because it is on the north end and away from a lot of tourist.

    • We are glad too, this beach club has a nice vibe and lounge music. Canibal Royal has been around for a while and we hope it keeps open for more.

  4. Great beach club. We went here a few days when we were in Playa Del Carmen. The music was lounge chill and the vibe was good. Not too many kids either, that’s nice.

  5. Wow! Superb location of the beach club and the blues of the ocean in front are great! I could of sat on the second floor looking out at the ocean for days. I like this beach club.

  6. Stunning views from the second floor of Canibal Royal. We like to go and sit here because it is less crowded and not the 20-27 year old electro party people. This beach club is a little more trendy then Mamitas.

  7. I’m curious to find how the beach is now? I know in the past Canibal Royal Beach Club in Playa was loosing the beach. What is it like now?

    • Hello Beto
The worst of the erosion is over and the nice thing is the Canibal Royal Beach Club has expanded to the one side. So there is a little more space. This beach club never was about swimming as much as it was a quiet getaway from the center. It still remains a little more trendy and stylish beach club.

  8. It’s awesome to visit this website and reading the
views of other commenters. I love Playa del Carmen and learning new places to go like this beach club.

  9. Wow, this looks like a cool beach club to check out. More hidden things to discover in Playa del Carmen. Your site is the best!

  10. Hi there to everyone. We went to Canibal Royal last week and had the best ceviche and it was such a nice relaxing afternoon there! I would recommended it but don’t want too many people to find out about it.

  11. Pretty nice post and video. It makes me want to go there as I sit in my office in Michigan. We are coming this next month and doing lots of planning using your site. Thanks for all the great tips.

    • Hello Clay. Yes Canibal Royal is open all the time. Even on some holidays there are special DJs and events here.

  12. I like Canibal Royal beach club because it is a little more sophisticated then the other beach clubs in Playa Del Carmen. It is tucked in the north and a nice way to spend an afternoon.

  13. Magnificent website. A lot of helpful info here. I am just sending it to several friends who are going to Playa Del Carmen this month.
And naturally, thanks on your sweat! I am sure going around taking all the photos is hard.

    • Hello Mitchell

We were just by Canibal Royal the other day. It was totally seaweed free. A little south of there on CoCo beach there is some but nothing like last year.

  14. We were at Canibal Royal for dinner last week and the lower level restaurant has been redecorated with attractive and comfy red chairs and lovely tables. We watched the sunset and enjoyed the breeze, and the food was terrific. Really a great night and I highly recommend it as a beachfront spot away from the downtown crowds. Unfortunately the beach is still eroded, and we saw the small beach area and chairs now on the sand to the south of the restaurant—their way to retain a daytime beach area for sunning.

  15. Trip Advisor says this place is closed. We’re staying 3 blocks away in a couple of days and when we were there last a few years back it was under construction. We were hoping to check it out this trip.

    • The beach club is still owned by the same people but now called Diablito Cha Cha Cha. The main building is the same but the beach has been warn down lately. It has lost a lot of the energy but can be a more quiet place for the beach.
